For many, comedies are a source of happiness and comfort. When you’re sad, stressed, or just not feeling like yourself, comedy is usually a go-to to relieve those feelings. Nothing makes you feel better quite like crying from laughing so hard. The best thing about comedy is that it comes in a variety of forms, such as movies. Comedies have been put on the screen since movies were invented with classics from the likes of comedy legends such as Buster Keaton or The Marx Brothers.

Another great aspect of comedy is that it can easily be used in the background while working or doing chores. It can make even the most mundane of tasks more enjoyable. Depending on what you are watching, you don’t even necessarily have to pay attention to the movie in order to enjoy it. Some comedies are funny regardless of their plot, or lack thereof. In fact, here are ten comedies you can watch that are still funny without really paying attention:

10 This is The End (2013)

     Sony Pictures Releasing

This is The End stars James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson, and many other celebrities as heightened versions of themselves during the apocalypse in L.A. They all hide out in Franco’s house and try (and ultimately fail) to ration their resources and entertain themselves in this huge mansion. There is truly no point during this movie where any attention has to be paid. Just hearing the banter between James Franco and Danny McBride is enough to make you fall off your couch from laughing so much.

9 21 Jump Street (2012)

     Columbia Pictures

Jonah Hill is going to be on this list more than once because the guy rarely misses when it comes to comedies. 21 Jump Street is based on the TV show of the same name from the late ’80s starring Johnny Depp. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum play two cops looking for their big career break when they get an assignment requiring them to go undercover as high school students to infiltrate a synthetic drug ring. This is “stupid” humor at its best. This is a movie that could honestly be watched with just the sound on, and it would still be funny.

8 We’re the Millers (2013)

     New Line Cinema

Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis truly make an excellent comedic duo. We’re the Millers stars Sudeikis as an average guy who happens to be a pot dealer in debt. He creates a fake family to pose as vacationers traveling back to the U.S. from Mexico, so they can smuggle an RV filled with marijuana back to the states and to his boss. Jennifer Aniston plays his fake wife who is really a stripper. Emma Roberts plays his fake daughter who is really a rebellious runaway. Will Poulter plays his fake son who is exactly the same as his real-life persona. Laughs are bound to ensue no matter how much or how little attention is being paid.

7 Just Go With It (2011)

The comedic timing of Jennifer Aniston is near perfect in Just Go With It. Pair that with the shenanigans of Adam Sandler, and you get comedy gold. Sandler plays a plastic surgeon who lies to his much younger girlfriend that he was going through a divorce, and convinces his assistant (played by Aniston) to pretend to be his soon-to-be ex-wife on a Hawaiian vacation. Her kids agree to pretend to be his kids as well as long as the son gets to swim with dolphins, and the daughter gets to use a British accent the whole trip. This is a movie that you could start watching in the middle and still understand and find funny.

6 The Hangover (2009)

     Warner Bros. Pictures

While the sequels are pretty much the first movie recycled, The Hangover is laugh-out-loud funny. “Stupid” humor is difficult to get right because it can’t be too ridiculous, and while The Hangover is certainly over the top, the jokes are humorous enough that it doesn’t even matter. The concept of a wild bachelor party gone wrong is simple enough that you don’t really need to be paying much attention to it. The humor will still land.

5 National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983)

     Warner Bros.

Clearly, something about National Lampoon’s Vacation worked well because three more of them were made. The famous Griswold family takes a road trip to Wally’s World theme park and of course, chaos ensues every step of the way. The Griswolds are such a dysfunctional family and everything they do somehow goes wrong. Despite some of the more negative press Chevy Chase has received in recent years, he is still undeniably funny as Clark Griswold.

4 Army of Darkness (1992)

     Universal Pictures

While technically the third and final installment of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy, Army of Darkness feels like a completely stand-alone film. Where the first two were horror movies, whereas Army of Darkness is a horror-comedy that leans heavily on comedy. Bruce Campbell is at his best here and gifted us with his glorious delivery of the line “Alright you primitive screwheads, listen up! This here is my boomstick!” Not only could this movie be watched without having seen the first two, but the scenes could be watched out of order, and it would still be hilarious.

3 Weird Science (1985)

Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith use a computer to physically create their idea of the perfect girl in John Hughes’ Weird Science. The plot is so absurd it’s funny. The boys actually wear bras on their heads while waiting for the computer to conjure up their new girlfriend. A young Robert Downey Jr. plays the bully and the late Bill Paxton plays the mean older brother. Again, this movie could be watched out of order, and it would still be funny.

2 Step Brothers (2008)

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are arguably one of the best comedic duos put on the big screen. In Step Brothers, they play two mortal enemies whose parents get married. They each still live with their parents, so they are then forced to not only live together but share a room together. Context isn’t even needed to enjoy this movie because John C. Reilly and Will Ferrell bounce off each other so well.

1 Wet Hot American Summer (2001)

     USA Films

With a cast list like this, Wet Hot American Summer is bound to make you laugh no matter what you’re doing. The star-studded cast includes Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Elizabeth Banks, Bradley Cooper, and so many more. It takes place on the last day of camp in the summer of 1981. The camp director falls in love with the local astrophysics who is trying to save the world from a falling piece of deadly NASA equipment. There are multiple love triangles, a talent show, and a talking vegetable can. It is absolute absurdity.
