While we had no reason to doubt them, director Bryan Singer and producer Simon Kinberg have proven to be men of their word. Within a few days of each other, Bryan Singer hinted that the first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse is coming soon, before Simon Kinberg confirmed that it will be attached to prints of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in theaters December 18. The trailer debuted online earlier today, and we’ve pored over this exciting footage frame by frame, creating a massive gallery of over 90 images from the new trailer.

Bryan Singer has teased in the past that X-Men: Apocalypse will be the end of the trilogy that includes X-Men: First Class and last year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. It has already been confirmed that upcoming movies such as Deadpool, Gambit and Wolverine 3 will be part of the X-Men universe, but 20th Century Fox hasn’t revealed any plans beyond those projects. A rumor did surface last month that claimed Bryan Singer is prepping a mystery X-Men movie that 20th Century Fox will release in 2018, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. He has been worshiped as a God since the dawn of civilization, but he has been asleep for a very long time. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction. It will be one of the greatest tests these Marvel superheroes have ever faced.

X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past stars Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Rose Byrne (Moira McTaggert), Evan Peters (Quicksilver) are returning to reprise their roles. New cast members include Oscar Isaac as the villainous Apocalypse, Olivia Munn as Psylocke, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler. The story is set in the year 1983, 10 years after the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Bryan Singer is directing from a script by Simon Kinberg, based on a story the director and screenwriter crafted together with Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty, who co-wrote the script for X2: X-Men: United. 20th Century Fox has slated X-Men: Apocalypse for release on May 27, 2016, putting it up against yet another sequel, Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass.
