Disney is known for creating magical worlds that suck in audiences from all over the world. From immersive storytelling to characters that reflect even some of the deepest parts of our souls, Disney has established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. However, even with this amazing reputation of making content that is tailored to and appropriate for viewers of all ages, sometimes a few questionable moments slip through the cracks.
As much as Disney brings our imaginations to life, they also know how to grip our heartstrings. Heart-wrenching character deaths are a common occurrence in the best Disney projects. Whether it be the inevitable defeat of a cunning villain or a character-building death of a protagonist, death in a Disney movie has always been a hard pill to swallow. Many of us at young age remember some traumatizing Disney deaths that will never leave our minds. However, some of those deaths can actually be quite graphic, and we definitely do not talk about it enough. Here are 12 Disney character deaths that are actually disturbing.
12 Oogie Boogie — The Nightmare Before Christmas
Touchstone Pictures
Oogie Boogie is one of many outlandish and creepy characters from The Nightmare Before Christmas. This film, whether you define it as a Christmas movie or a Halloween movie, opens a door for some dark and disturbing visuals. When it comes character deaths, of course, this movie tapped into the bizarre. Oogie Boogie is basically a living sack. However, when he gets unwrapped/unraveled in this movie, his interior of gooey, creepy, crawling bugs comes pouring out. Is it the goriest? No. But the image itself makes our skin crawl.
11 Dr. Facilier — The Princess and the Frog
Walt Disney Pictures
The Princess and the Frog’s Dr. Facilier is one of the most overlooked Disney princess villains. With the powers to control shadows, Dr. Facilier is scheming to get himself leaps and bounds ahead of our main protagonists: Prince Naveen and Tiana. By the end of the movie, he faces a terrifying death. With the idea of the afterlife a constant theme in his existence, Facilier gets dragged into hell/the underworld.
10 The Evil Queen — Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which will also be getting its own live-action remake, per Deadline, was a movie that defined the Disney brand. From the groundbreaking animation to the iconic Snow White dress, this movie has created lasting images in the minds of Disney fans all over the world. The death of The Evil Queen, however, might be much darker than you remember. The Evil Queen, in her “old hag” form, falls off the edge of a cliff to her demise. However, a quick shot of the vultures is a good indicator that not only is the witch dead, but the birds might have some dinner for the night.
9 Shan Yu — Mulan
We love a woman that defies societal boundaries. Mulan is one of the most triumphant films Disney has put out and with that, some great characters, both villain and hero. Shan Yu, the main villain in Mulan goes one-on-one against her during the climax of the film. On a rooftop overlooking the city, Shan Yu gets taken out by a firework and quite literally explodes in a burst of colors. Visually, this is not the most disturbing. However, when you really think about it, it’s a lot to handle.
8 Stegosaurus — Fantasia
Disney, throughout its history, does not shy away from death. However, showing it on screen is an entirely different level of disturbing. During a scene in the 1940 animated film Fantasia, Stegosaurus gets killed in a fight on-screen. Now, although the animation and subject kind of softens the blow, it still seems like a lot for Disney to include on screen.
7 Tadashi Hamada — Big Hero 6
Tadashi Hamada’s death is a loss none of us have forgiven Disney for. Big Hero 6 has made a home in the hearts of Disney fans of all ages. As much as we love Baymax and Hero’s dynamic, the natural brotherhood between Hero and Tadashi is one of the most relatable relationships in Disney. Well, of course, they had to go and take it away from us. Tadashi, being the hero and role model for his little brother, sacrifices himself to save others. He runs into a burning building and gets lost when the building explodes.
6 Bambi’s Mom — Bambi
Walt Disney Productions
Bambi’s Mom gets shot and killed. Maybe the 1942 original Bambi is already a horror movie. That should explain it well enough. Bambi is a frail little deer who is loved and cared for by his mother. When she gets killed by “The Man,” Bambi is left to find his own way. Audiences were introduced to the harsh realities of hunting culture in a gruesome display of a child losing a mother.
5 Mufasa — The Lion King
Mufasa’s death in The Lion King is one of if not the saddest character deaths in Disney history. During this pivotal part of Simba’s story, Mufasa is suspended over a large stampede with only Scar’s claws holding him up. Simba watches his father fall and gets trampled on and that leads to a heartbreaking scene between father and son. That and the reality of Scar killing his own brother is a painful thing to endure and makes this death disturbing for people of all ages.
4 Syndrome — The Incredibles
Buena Vista Pictures Distribution
Graphic character deaths in Disney movies are not as uncommon as you may think. Disney does a good job at making sure that the gore of these deaths does not make to the screen. However, the implications are always a hard pill to swallow. Syndrome’s death in The Incredibles is one of the most shocking. Syndrome gets sucked in by the force of a jet engine and let’s just say his flight ended right then and there.
3 Ursula — The Little Mermaid
With the new live-action Little Mermaid coming up, it’s time to dive under the sea to explore the death of the most threatening sea witch of them all. Ursula’s death in The Little Mermaid happens in the climax of the movie. Ursula’s plan to marry Eric is spoiled, and her rage has her turn into a massive sea monster. Well, in a weird turn of events, she is brought down by getting impaled (yes, you read that right).
2 Scar — The Lion King
When the conversation about traumatic Disney deaths comes up, The Lion King is one of those movies that you cannot avoid. Of course, Mufasa’s death had us all in shambles. However, we tend to forget that Scar’s death is maybe even more brutal. Although we don’t see him actually die on-screen, Scar meets a horrifying (and deserving end) when he gets cornered by the band of hyenas, and they all swarm him, leaving us to assume he was eaten.
1 Clayton — Tarzan
Clayton is a villain in the 1999 animated Disney film Tarzan. Tarzan is full of incredible storylines, a lovable protagonist, and a masterful soundtrack. However, sometimes, dark undertones bleed through in Disney movies. Clayton’s death is one of them. In the death scene. Clayton is hacking away at some vines that have him tangled up high in the air. However, once the vines get his body loose, the remaining ones are not enough to hold up his weight. He falls, with a vine still wrapped around his neck.
