Spoilers ahead for the season finale of 1883. So, if you have not watched yet, be warned.

The prequel to Yellowstone wrapped up its first season this past Sunday on Paramount+. Much like the parent show, it certainly left viewers talking and perhaps even shedding some tears. The show delivered a pretty intense finale most people did not see coming. This series looks at the history of the famed Dutton family from its early beginnings. We saw a little piece of this in Yellowstone Season 4, but in 1883 it is explored even further.

What is Next for 1883?

Elsa Dutton, who is arguably the show’s main character, died in her father James’s arms after succumbing to an arrow wound. That wasn’t all. Fan-favorite Shea Brennan made good on his promise to see the Pacific Ocean, so his late wife could “use [his] eyes to see the world” then promptly shot himself. The finale felt like an end to a story or a book as opposed to the first season of a show. Major characters are no longer alive, and other elements wrapped up as multiple story arcs ended. So how what now? How can the series move forward and draw us closer to the current Yellowstone ranch as we know it today?

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

David Glasser recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the finale and what is coming next for the show. The 1883 finale “This Is Not Your Heaven,” which was written by Taylor Sheridan, left us with a lot of questions.

When asked about the direction certain characters took, Glasser explained that:

He also goes on to explain Taylor’s brilliance in hiding Elsa’s ending in plain sight.

He further explains that Paramount+ has ordered “additional episodes” of 1883 but hasn’t called it an official season 2. With the next series following the Dutton’s family into 1932, it looks as though we will have some episodes follow this finale and lead us into the 1900’s. The Yellowstone universe continues to grow as the 6666 spinoff is coming next year. Of course, this will follow Jimmy as he heads back to Texas with his new wife. Don’t forget that season five of Yellowstone begins shooting this fall. As far as how many seasons are left in that story, it seems that weight falls on the shoulders of Taylor Sheridan and how much he has left to tell. You can stream the first season of 1883 now on Paramount+.
