The Yellowstone prequel series 1923, led by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren and Academy Award nominee Harrison Ford, has officially been renewed for a second season by Paramount+. Taking to social media to announce the news, audiences are reminded that the first season of 1923 still has a few episodes left, and it won’t be the last we see from this chapter of the Yellowstone origin story…
“There are more stories to tell… #1923TV will return for a second season,” a brief statement from the official 1923 Twitter account reads. “In the meantime, season 1 continues with new episodes this Sunday, exclusively on @paramountplus. See you soon.”
Picking up a century before the events of the hugely popular Yellowstone, 1923 is the next installment of the Dutton family origin story. The prequel introduces a new generation of Duttons led by patriarch Jacob (Ford) and matriarch Cara (Mirren), following a generation of the Dutton family in 1923. The series will pick up with the family during a time of various hardships, including Western Expansion, pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression. Each of these plagues the mountain west and the Duttons who call it home.
Created by Yellowstone’s Taylor Sheridan, 1923 stars Brandon Sklenar (The Offer), Darren Mann (Animal Kingdom), Michelle Randolph (A Snow White Christmas), James Badge Dale (Hightown), Marley Shelton (Scream), Brian Geraghty (Big Sky), Aminah Nieves (Blueberry), Julia Schlaepfer (The Politician), Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones), Jennifer Ehle (Zero Dark Thirty), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Peacemaker), Sebastian Roché (The Originals), and Timothy Dalton (Hot Fuzz, Toy Story 4) alongside Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.

1923 Continues the Critical Acclaim Shared by the Yellowstone Universe
Paramount+
So far, the Yellowstone shared universe, which includes the prequel series’ 1923 and 1883, has been met with critical acclaim. 1923 currently holds an impressive 89% score on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with consensus praising the performances from A-lister leads Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford. “Distinguished by the ineffable star power of Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, 1923 is another solid if unrelentingly grim addition to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe,” the consensus reads.
Not only does 1923 continue the critical success, but the viewership success as well, with the first episode reportedly drawing 7.4 million viewers and beating previous records held by the streaming platform.
Both Mirren and Ford have heaped nothing but praise on writer and creator Taylor Sheridan. “He’s fabulously hands-off. He presents the script, and it’s so extraordinary that you don’t want to change a word,” Mirren said of the man behind Yellowstone. “You want to do it exactly as it’s written because it’s written with incredible precision but without being labored. To be able to be a part of a franchise in a world that is so singular on American television is very exciting. There’s nothing else quite like it."
“He’s an incredible horseman. He’s a genuine athlete, and that’s something you might not expect to find in such a talented writer and intellectual thinker,” adds Ford.
1923 premiered on Dec. 18 on Paramount+ and will conclude with its eighth episode on Feb. 12.
