It’s the dawn of a new era in the first trailer for the upcoming Yellowstone prequel series, 1923. The series, which is all set to debut on Paramount+ in December, finds Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Hollywood legend Harrison Ford in the lead alongside the Oscar Winner and equally legendary Helen Mirren. Set a century before the hugely popular Yellowstone, 1923 is the next installment of the Dutton family origin story, and will introduce a new generation of Duttons led by patriarch Jacob (Ford) and matriarch Cara (Mirren). Following a generation of the Dutton family during, you guessed it, 1923, the prequel series will pick up with the family during a time of various hardships including Western Expansion, pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression. Each of which plagues the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.
Created once again by Taylor Sheridan, 1923 stars Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, Sebastian Roché, Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, James Badge Dale, Marley Shelton, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, Brandon Sklenar, Robert Patrick, and Timothy Dalton.
Hollywood Legends Harrison Ford & Helen Mirren Will Lead 1923 for Paramount+

Aside from being a spinoff of Yellowstone, 1923’s biggest selling point by far falls to its leading star, Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. The iconic acting duo will star in the series as Jacob Dutton, the patriarch of the Yellowstone ranch and Cara Dutton, the wife to Jacob Dutton and family matriarch, respectively.
“He’s the silverback,” Ford said of his character, Jacob. Who will no doubt find Ford on suitably gruff form. “He’s responsible for that branch of the family. These are two people with a very strong bond to each other who are facing really complicated circumstances.”
“You need someone who is capable of making decisions, and hopefully making the right decisions, but at least making a decision and going with it—in other words, a leader. That’s what has propelled them into this position of running the ranch, running the family, being the linchpin around whom, at this moment in time, the family revolves,” adds Mirren when discussing the couple.
Ford continues, offering further insight into the central couple and the tough lives they now lead. “Their lives are totally wrapped up in each other,” says the actor. “There’s very little that sustains them other than themselves and the hard work and investment they put into their future and their family. It is a tough life, and it’s full of not just physical challenges but moral ones as well.”
“An incredible partnership where you can be honest with each other, and your love and support of each other is total, but at the same time you are no longer blinded by love or by lust,” Mirren says. “You’re much more clear-eyed about your relationship, but the relationship becomes all the stronger for that very reason.”
1923 is set to premiere on December 18, 2022, on Paramount+. The Yellowstone prequel series has already been renewed for season 2, with 1923 set to last for two seasons as eight episodes each.
