Stunts can be the most visually pleasing but also very dangerous part of a film or series. Sometimes these performances don’t go as planned and can endanger the stunt devil, which may even turn fatal. Even the world-famous specialist/actor, Jackie Chan, wasn’t an exception. However, as painful as it sounds, it’s these failed stunts that work like magic to bring out the ‘perfect expression’ from the actors.
During interviews, actors have often described how a certain stunt was difficult or resulted in an injury that put them in the hospital. Regardless, the cameras still roll and some of these moments make their way to the final cut, and finally onto the screens. Here are some gut-wrecking times when stunts went wrong but still made it to the final cut.
6 Tome Cruise - Mission: Impossible - Fallout
Paramount Pictures
Devoted fans know just how famous Tom Cruise is for doing his own stunts. Especially in the film, Mission: Impossible - Fallout. However, since he isn’t a professionally trained stuntman, it’s no surprise that he suffered from a couple of injuries during the shooting. One particular scene in which he jumps from one roof to another, during a chase, Cruise accidentally broke his ankle. His ankle collided against the side of the roof. While the stunt went as planned, the scene changed a bit. Cruise was originally supposed to pull himself up after hitting the wall. According to him, he didn’t want to do the stunt again with a broken ankle, so he carried on with the scene while dragging his feet. To fans’ surprise, the cameras kept rolling, and the limping scene made it to the big screen.
5 Cheryl Wheeler-Dixon - Back To The Future Part II
Universal PicturesUniversal Pictures Home Entertainment
Cheryl Wheeler-Dixon, a women’s kickboxing champion, entered the franchise after her predecessor walked away from the shooting. Mainly due to how dangerous this specific stunt was. This fan-loved scene was quite straight-forward. Originally, it was supposed to be Biff and his crew chasing Marty on hoverboards and bursting through the clock tower windows. The stunt devils were supposed to swing on the supporting wires and generate momentum to smash through the glass door, made of candy. A member of the stunt effects would release the wires and drop on the airbags without a scratch. However, much to her horror, Cheryl couldn’t get through the glass and accidentally hit a pillar. This caused her to fall onto concrete, twenty-feet away. This accident led to her getting reconstructive surgery, while also having metal implants installed in her face. She later sued the film for making the scene to the final cut.
4 Ellen Burstyn - The Exorcist
Warner Bros. Pictures
The Exorcist was intense, and so were its stunts. While almost all of them carried on smoothly, some didn’t. For one particular scene, the actors recall being jerked around on wires in sub-zero temperatures. It followed the infamous throw-up part, where the staff accidentally sprayed Jason Miller in the face. Much to his dismay, this stayed in the film. In another scene, Ellen Burstyn was supposed to be pulled off the ground with wires, after being slammed by her possessed daughter. According to her interview in Huffington Post, she even predicted that she could get hurt while performing this scene. And to her dismay, it resulted in her spine being permanently injured. The staff didn’t pull the wires on time, and she smashed onto the floor. The scene still made it to the final cut, and it looks as painful as it must’ve felt.
3 Margaret Hamilton - The Wizard of Oz
Loews Cineplex Entertainment
Stunts can be crazy, especially when they are related to fire. Margaret Hamilton, who played the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, was also part of an unfortunate accident. During the scene in which the witch disappears dramatically, leaving a fog of smoke, Margaret was supposed to exit the scene through the hidden trap door. However, she fell face-to-face with the fire after the door malfunctioned. She was then forced to wear green gloves for the next few scenes, because of the burns.
2 George Clooney - Syriana
This particular scene with George Clooney shouldn’t have been dangerous. During the questioning scene, where his character is supposed to be tied up to a chair, questioned in a gruesome manner, and thrown on the ground, he hits his head too hard. According to George, he felt as if he was having a stroke. He couldn’t see or stand, and his head was ringing alarms. He was immediately flown to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA, where they found out that he was leaking spinal fluid and tore his outer layer of the spinal cord. The surprising thing is that Clooney confessed to wanting to take his own life due to the immense pain. However, the shot ended up in the final cut and Clooney was able to receive an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
1 Leonardo DiCaprio - Django Unchained
Columbia PicturesSony PicturesThe Weinstein Company
One of the most famous stunt-going-wrong scenes was with Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained. In a scene, Calvin Candie (DiCaprio) was supposed to slam his hand on the table to make a point. Unfortunately, the glass in his hand shattered and stabbed his hand. However, much to the staff’s surprise, DiCaprio kept on proceeding with his lines and even picking up the shards of glass with a calm expression. DiCaprio’s character wasn’t supposed to hurt his hand, but the director liked this scene even better and decided to add it to the final cut.
