One of the funniest satirical TV series available to watch on HBO Max right now, The Righteous Gemstones has officially begun production on season 3 after first being broadcast in 2019. The series follows widower and church leader, Dr Eli Gemstone (John Goodman) and his three children.
The Righteous Gemstones features performances from an ensemble cast that includes, in addition to Goodman, Adam DeVine, Edi Patterson, and Danny McBride. Since its premiere in 2019, the HBO series has received excellent reviews, particularly for cast’s performances. 7 Danny McBride Used to be a Substitute Teacher

Danny McBride stars as Jesse Gemstone, Eli’s oldest son and associate pastor of the Gemstone Salvation Centre. Before McBride found success in the acting industry, however, he worked in several different jobs, one of which was substitute teaching. After he tried to make it in Los Angeles in the industry and found himself disappointed, he took a job as a substitute teacher to support himself. He reflected on his experience with humour, and it’s clear that his life is now rapidly different from those days.

6 John Goodman Almost Had a Career in Football
John Goodman stars as Dr. Eli Gemstone, the patriarch of the Gemstone family and lead pastor of the Gemstone Salvation Center. Eli is a widower, having lost his wife, Aimee-Leigh, one year prior to the start of the series. Before his career in entertainment, Goodman attended Southwest Missouri State University on a football scholarship, however, after he experienced an injury, his once-promising career was cut short.
5 Edi Patterson Slept On a Couch When She First Move to LA
Edi Patterson stars as Judy Gemstone, Eli’s daughter. Judy, the middle child, often feels underestimated by her family and is prone to neurotic and psychopathic behavior. Before she made her mark in the industry, Patterson moved to Los Angeles on a whim and slept on her friend’s couch for a month before finding her feet in the city.
4 At Age 11, Adam DeVine Was Hit by a Cement Truck and Left Unconscious
Adam DeVine is Kelvin Gemstone, Eli’s youngest son and youth pastor of the Gemstone Salvation Centre. DeVine recently revealed, per The Things, that he was left unconscious in his youth after being hit by a cement truck. He spent two years of his life with limited mobility afterwards and now reflects on the incident light-heartedly.
3 Cassidy Freeman Did Ballet as a Child
Cassidy Freeman stars as Amber Gemstone, Jesse’s supportive and loving wife, who seems mostly oblivious to Jesse’s negative qualities. Freeman grew up in Chicago and became involved with ballet dancing throughout her childhood. She would state that this would inspire her love for being onstage and was the root of her realizing her love of acting.
2 Edi Patterson Studied at Texas State University
Patterson was born in a Texas city, and before she became a successful actress, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Texas State University. This is where she would nourish her talents before making her debut as an actress.
1 Danny McBride Was Offered a professional Baseball Contract
McBride was offered a baseball contract to play with The Pelicans. This was announced in 2009, however, McBride did not take up this offer. It’s interesting to consider that his career could have moved in this direction, similarly to Goodman and football.
