True crime shows have been a fascination of the public, something scientists and psychologists say may be remnants of a need to protect ourselves. While depictions of crime may often depict masculine figures as the spearheads of mobs, murders, and theft, there are some pretty interesting statistics about the role of women in crime. There are incentives for women to not participate in certain affairs, but, statistically, according to IZA World of Labor, it seems that women are more likely to commit theft or fraud if they are involved with breaking the law. And, perhaps, this is why television shows like The Dropout have become so popular lately.
Amanda Seyfried stars in Hulu’s The Dropout, an eight-part series about the founder of Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes. Holmes was once the leader of a rising start-up in the tech world and claimed that the technology she was creating could revolutionize blood-testing. However, this was all a ruse — Holmes did not have the technology she claimed to have, thus convicting her of fraud in court. This seems to be a common trend in television: crime is no longer a boys’ club. Interested in shows in a similar vein as The Dropout? We have you covered with these 7 shows.
