Actors are what bring a movie or show and its characters to life, and make those characters seem real to the audience. Actors get into character in different ways, from researching the role to going full method and living as the person they’re portraying. Many actors come to love the roles they have played, and consider that character part of them. However, some actors have not only disliked a character they played, but actively hated them. Plummer gave an excellent performance as the tough Captain who softens over time, but offscreen, he thought the character was boring and didn’t have much personality. He even said that he didn’t enjoy the movie itself, as the musical genre and overly sentimental themes weren’t for him.

7 Blake Lively as Serena van der Woodsen – Gossip Girl (2007-2012)

     Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution

Blake Lively’s Serena van der Woodsen was a major part of Gossip Girl’s original run. As one of the most popular Upper East Siders on the show, Serena was caught up in several lies, romances, and scandals. Lively later expressed concern over the kind of messages that Serena and the show have sent to young viewers over the years in glamorizing that bad behavior. She said that the character of Serena isn’t one that she feels fully proud of, or one that sends a good example.

6 Sean Connery as James Bond – The James Bond Franchise (1962-1983)

     United Artists

Sean Connery is considered one of the best actors to ever take on the role of iconic spy James Bond. Yet despite originating the role in 1962’s Dr. No, and playing Bond in seven total movies, he admitted to hating the character. The Guardian shared that he was even quoted as saying he’d “like to kill” James Bond if given the chance, though some of the hatred may be linked to the process of filming and the business behind it. Despite his hatred, Bond will likely remain Connery’s best-known role.

5 Halle Berry as Catwoman – Catwoman (2004)

     Warner Bros. Pictures

Despite Halle Berry giving a great performance as the title character, the Catwoman movie is considered a huge disappointment, for everything from its changing of the character’s comic book origin story to its costumes. Berry won the Razzie for Worst Actress that year, and criticized the movie, its writing, and the character herself in accepting the award. Despite her early hatred of the role, she later said she would love to revisit and reinterpret it, with the experience and knowledge she’s gained since then.

4 Harrison Ford as Han Solo – Star Wars (1977-2015)

Cool and cynical, yet caring, the pilot and smuggler Han Solo is one of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars universe. The role was played perfectly by Harrison Ford, who brought wit, heart, and humor. Yet off-screen, Ford hated the character. Ford felt Han lacked depth; he was neither the main hero nor a main villain, and served as middle-ground. Far Out Magazine shared that Ford wanted the character to be killed off in 1983’s Return of the Jedi, thinking that it would make Han’s arc more interesting. Ford waited more than 30 years for this wish, when Han was killed in 2015’s The Force Awakens.

3 Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey – Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy (2015-2018)

     Universal Pictures

The title character in the Fifty Shades of Grey films, Christian Grey is a rich businessman who seems charming on the outside. Beneath the surface, however, he has a secret life of intense sexual acts, which he draws Ana (Dakota Johnson) into. Jamie Dornan portrays Christian, a role he hated and actually wasn’t supposed to have. The role originally went to Charlie Hunnam, but Dornan took over after he stepped down, and has since made his dislike well-known through criticizing the character and his personality.

2 Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg – You (2018-Present)

     Netflix

Despite being such a dark and evil character, Joe and the show have proven popular with fans. Badgley, however, disagreed with the support and love for the character. He said that there is little he enjoys in Joe, and finds him to be a completely horrible person, though he tries to make the character somewhat likable.

1 Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen – The Twilight Saga (2008-2012)

     Summit Entertainment

As brooding vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga, Robert Pattinson hated not only the character, but the whole franchise. In an interview with Variety, he said that he found the series’s main premise of forbidden, dangerous love to be “weird,” and not the timeless love story it was presented as. He was well-known for criticizing the series and the character during the filming and promotion of the saga, but regardless of how he felt about it, the series lives on as a fan-favorite.
