7 Andrew Garfield — Under The Banner of Heaven

     Hulu

There is no doubt that the Oscar-nominated actor Andrew Garfield is one of the most talented actors working. He recently took the lead role in FX’s Under The Banner Of Heaven as Detective Jeb Pyre who investigates a double murder in the Mormon community. Garfield gives an honest and raw performance as a man filled with conflict in both humanity and faith. It is an extremely emotional role, and it is clear that Garfield gives everything he has with every line.

6 Martin Short — Only Murders in the Building

In Only Murders in the Building, Martin Short gives possibly the greatest performance of his career. He plays an aging theater director who becomes intertwined in a murder investigation in his Upper West Side apartment building. Although Short delivers the expected comedic moments, he also gives us honest dramatic moments, particularly when he interacts with his semi-estranged son.

5 Selena Gomez — Only Murders in the Building

Selena Gomez is another scene-stealer in the acclaimed Hulu series. Her chemistry with Martin Short and Steve Martin is top-notch, and she offers a subtle, yet effective, performance in every episode. Her character is the perfect encapsulation of the Millennial generation and her frustration with the two older men she spends her days with is hilarious to watch.

4 Issa Rae — Insecure

     Via HBO

The final season of Insecure brought the series together in epic fashion. Issa Rae was at the top of her game playing the 30-something Issa navigating love, friendship, and life. Her character has grown a lot, but Rae still depicts the hardships and confusion of life and love. Rae was a revelation and gave us one of the most memorable characters in recent years.

3 Jean Smart — Hacks

     HBO Max

Jean Smart is absolutely brilliant in Hacks playing an aging, yet highly accomplished, Las Vegas comedian who begins an unexpected friendship with a young writer (Hanna Einbinder). Smart proves, with this performance, that she is one of the most underrated actors around. She is so real and honest, and delivers countless hilarious moments. At the same time, she perfectly captures the persona of a show business legend trying to keep her career afloat.

2 Lily James — Pam & Tommy

In Pam & Tommy, Lily James is completely unrecognizable as the superstar, Pamela Anderson. Her voice, physicality, and emotion are completely on-point with every episode. James shows us the caring and heartfelt side of Anderson that many may not have seen before. At the same time, she shows us the struggles and abuse that Anderson had to put up with for years, and the effects that it had on her personally.

1 Sebastian Stan — Pam & Tommy

If you don’t look twice, you might actually think that Sebastian Stan is the real rock legend, Tommy Lee. Stan perfectly nails the persona and physicality of Lee and his hard-partying lifestyle. Stan offers several dramatic, as well as comedic moments, as the show’s antihero. He is absolutely brilliant and proved that he is one of the great talents working.
