Perhaps the greatest football quarterback of all time, Tom Brady has won seven Super Bowls over 22 seasons with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, the GOAT is looking to add one more title to his lengthy and impressive resume: film producer. Brady will produce and star in 80 for Brady, an upcoming sports comedy film produced by Brady’s company 199 Productions and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The name 199 Productions is a nod to the 2000 NFL Draft, where Brady was the 199th selection in the sixth round. Seems like a great choice in hindsight, right?

Revolving around four older friends who travel to watch the Patriots play in one of their Super Bowl appearances, producing 80 for Brady would have marked a career change for the recently retired Tom Brady. As we know now, his retirement lasted all of 40 days, which initially threw the production for a loop. Despite concerns about potential scheduling difficulties, the team was able to keep the GOAT on board. Currently, 80 for Brady is still going ahead, with Brady producing and appearing.

With that in mind, let’s look at everything we know about the sports comedy reportedly inspired by true events. How will the film’s dramatized plot incorporate the real story? In addition to Brady, who has been lined up in the cast? When and where can audiences expect to see the film? And what else should we know about 80 for Brady?

80 for Brady: The Plot

     NFL

As mentioned, the film is inspired by the true story of four women going to 2017’s Super Bowl LI. The Patriots defeated the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in that game, but how they got there was the real story. Fans may remember that the Falcons led 28-3 at one point in the third quarter, with the Patriots coming back to win it all in overtime. Dramatizing that incredible finish could be the recipe for a hugely successful sports movie. Add in the exploits of four diehard Pats fans, and we can already tell this will be a hit.

The film is based on the true story of four older women who traveled to the 2017 game for a chance to watch their hero Brady play the game. We don’t yet know where their adventures will take them, only that they will face the “chaos that ensues as they navigate the wilds of the biggest sporting event in the country.”

As a devoted fan, seeing your team down by 25 points late in the third quarter would be pretty demoralizing. However, coming back to win by 6 points could make you feel on top of the world. Showing this comeback through the eyes of some of the biggest fans will likely make for a thrilling and suspenseful watch. However Brady and the filmmakers approach the story, it will most likely be a captivating tale of one of the biggest Super Bowls of all time.

80 for Brady: The Cast

     Netflix

Brady and his production company are sparing no expense in lining up big names for the feature. The four leads are played by some of Hollywood’s most notable icons: Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Sally Field, and Rita Moreno. While we know that they are the leads, we don’t yet know the names of their characters or what exact role they will play in the story. Obviously, Brady will appear as himself, though how big his role is unknown. Since he is producing the film about his Super Bowl win (and his name is in the title), we can reasonably expect that he will have a major role.

The four leading ladies and Brady will be joined by an ensemble cast of names like Sara Gilbert, Glynn Turman, Bob Balaban, Ron Funches, Jimmy O. Yang, Harry Hamlin, and Billy Porter. Even the Mayor of Flavortown himself, Guy Fieri, will be appearing in a cameo. Besides the Mayor, none of the other stars have confirmed roles or storylines yet.

All that audiences can do is wait and see, as more casting details and announcements will likely follow in the coming weeks and months.

Release Date

As of this writing, there is no release date confirmed. Filming began in March 2022 in Los Angeles. This means that the film could potentially be ready for a February 2023 release, lining it up perfectly with the next Super Bowl. While we won’t know who is playing until early next year, there’s more than a good chance that Brady could return to the big game to celebrate his un-retirement. Releasing a Brady Super Bowl film just before a possible new Brady Super Bowl appearance; that marketing just takes care of itself. Even if Brady is not in the next game, releasing the movie on Super Bowl weekend is still a great way to capitalize on the hype. All we can do is wait and see.
