The 94th Annual Academy Awards will air Sunday, March 27 on ABC, and among its nominees are Will Smith, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kristen Stewart, and Kirsten Dunst, to name a few. In its 94 years, The Academy Awards has honored countless leading male and female performances in any given year dating back to its inaugural ceremony in 1927. The most satisfying thing about watching the Oscars year after year is seeing a tremendous performance earn its deserved recognition and be honored with the prestigious Oscar statuette.

That said, for every winning performance there are four equally deserving runners-up that, unfortunately, do not take home the gilded trophy. Moreover, many times, a deserving candidate is overlooked on numerous occasions despite their immense talent. This is sometimes hard to fathom as a viewer, let alone as the nominee. The Academy has even been known to honor people for less deserving performances in a compensatory fashion if an actor has been snubbed many times in previous years, or as in the case of eight-time nominee Peter O’Toole an honorary Oscar celebrating his career as a whole. While we wait impatiently to honor the best in motion pictures of 2021, we have compiled a list of actors with multiple Oscar Nominations, but zero wins.

Glenn Close — 8 Nominations

     Jaffe/Lansing Productions

The phenomenal Glenn Close has received multiple Oscar nominations in her decades-long career, but surprisingly has never taken home the gold. Close was nominated for Best Supporting Actress 3 consecutive years from 1982 to 1984 for her work in The World According to Garp, The Big Chill, and The Natural, respectively. More recently in 2020, she was nominated for an additional Best Supporting Oscar for The Hillbilly Elegy wherein she plays the brazen, no-nonsense Grandma Mamaw. Close has also received multiple Best Actress nominations for her roles as infamous bunny boiler Alex Forrest in Fatal Attraction, proper lady Marquise de Marteuil in Dangerous Liaisons, transgender butler Albert Nobbs in Albert Nobbs, and the titular wife Joan in The Wife. Close being looked over for her performance in The Wife goes down in history as one of the most notorious Best Actress Oscar snubs of all time.

Amy Adams – 6 nominations

     Annapurna Pictures

Amy Adams who stars opposite Close in The Hillbilly Elegy is another impressive actress that has multiple Oscar nominations but zero wins. Adams has received five Best Supporting Actress nominations for her roles in Junebug, Doubt, The Fighter, The Master, and more recently Vice. She was also nominated for a Best Actress award for her role in 2014’s American Hustle, in which she plays a professional con artist that aids the FBI in plotting an elaborate sting to take down some corrupt politicians. Though she earned high praise for her performance in the film, Adams has since opened up to GQ magazine about the hardships she faced while working on American Hustle.

Albert Finney – 5 Nominations

     Universal Pictures

Sadly, the great Albert Finney passed away without ever having been honored for his work. The talented actor received 4 Oscar nominations throughout his lengthy career. His best actor nominations include Tom Jones, Murder on the Orient Express, The Dresser, and Under The Volcano. He was also nominated for best supporting actor for his role as Ed Masry in 2001’s David and Goliath legal drama Erin Brockovich.

Michelle Williams – 4 Nominations

     River Road Entertainment

Dawson’s Creek alum Michelle Williams has come a long way since her time in Capeside. The talented actress has gone on to become a true Hollywood heavyweight, earning multiple Oscar nominations throughout her career. Williams earned two Best Supporting Actress nominations for her work in Brokeback Mountain and Manchester by The Sea, as well as two Best Actress nods for her roles in Blue Valentine and My Week with Marilyn. Williams’ honest and emotional portrayal of Marilyn Monroe was spot-on. Brokeback Mountain’s 2006 nomination was a huge step forward regarding queer representation at the Oscars.

Bradley Cooper – 4 Nominations

     Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Bradley Cooper stars opposite fellow Oscar-nominee Amy Adams in American Hustle which earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination in 2014. He was also nominated for multiple Oscar noms for Best Actor for his roles as mentally unstable Pat Solitano in Silver Linings Playbook, US Navy Seal Chris Kyle in American Sniper, and alcoholic rock-star Jackson Maine in the fourth iteration of the Hollywood classic A Star is Born. Co-starring with Cooper is Lady Gaga who was also nominated as Best Actress for her role in the film. Lady Gaga is one of many accomplished singers who have been nominated for an Oscar for their acting.

Warren Beatty & Annette Bening – 4 Nominations each

     Mulholland Productions

This hot celebrity couple have a total of 8 acting nominations between them and have each been jilted 4 times by The Academy. The gifted actor, writer, and director Warren Beatty has amassed a total of 15 Oscar nominations over his 60-plus-year career, four of which were for Best Oscar. Shockingly the gifted actor has never taken home the prize, however deserving he might be. His nominations were for Bonnie and Clyde, Heaven Can Wait, Reds, and Bugsy. Coincidentally, his long-time partner Annette Bening has similarly been nominated for four Academy Awards without having won. Bening was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for The Grifters and Best Actress for American Beauty, Being Julia, and The Kids Are All Right. In 2016, the pair were both nominated for an Oscar in the same year.

Edward Norton – 3 Nominations

     New Line Cinema

Edward Norton has the uncanny ability to disappear into whatever role he is playing. It is no doubt he has earned multiple Oscar nominations in his career. Norton was nominated for two Best Supporting Actor awards for his work as mild-mannered Aaron Stampler in the psychological thriller Primal Fear, as well as a standout performance as gifted but self-absorbed actor Mike Shiner in Birdman. Norton’s best performance, however, was as repentant white supremacist Derek Vinyard in America History X who tried to save his brother Danny from repeating his mistakes. The role earned him a Best Actor Nomination in 2000.

Sigourney Weaver - 3 Nominations

     Warner Bros.

Sigourney Weaver has a career lauded with critical acclaim. The talented actress has garnered multiple Oscar nominations in her career and unfortunately zero wins. She was nominated for a Best Actress award for her badass portrayal of Ellen Ripley in Ridley Scotts Alien, and her captivating performance as Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist.
