Oscar-winning actress and celebrated director Regina King seems to be in relatively good spirits in a photo captured by her cousin Lawrence Cain Jr., which was shared to Twitter. Cain shared the photo of King bare-faced and smiling during a Facetime call ahead of her first Mother’s Day since losing her only child Ian Alexander Jr. to suicide in January. He was 26 years old. In his caption, Cain asked that people continue to pray for mothers who are living without their children. King and her ex-husband, record producer Ian Alexander, welcomed their first and only child together in 1996. The two married a year later but divorced in 2007.

King is Close to Wrapping Up Netflix Biopic of Shirley Chisholm

No doubt working through enormous pain, King has teamed up with Netflix in an effort to expand their catalog of content based on real historical and events and people to tell the story of and star as the much-admired political figure Shirley Chisholm. The logline reads as follows:

Starring alongside Regina King in Shirley are W. Earl Brown (Deadwood) as George Wallace, Terrence Howard (Empire), Lance Reddick (John Wick franchise), Amirah Vann (Underground), Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea), Andre Holland (Passing), Christina Jackson (Swagger), Dorian Missick (For Life), Michael Cherrie (Home Again) and newcomer Ethan Jones Romero.

Shirley is the intimate portrayal of trailblazing political icon Shirley Chisholm, the first Black Congresswoman and the first Black woman to run for President of the U.S., and the cost of accomplishment for Shirley herself. This film will tell the story of Chisholm’s boundary-breaking and historic presidential campaign, based on exclusive and extensive conversations with family, friends and those who knew her best.

Netflix has not announced a set date for Shirley but given their production schedule of having things wrapped up by March before heading to Los Angeles and finishing production in New York, audiences could probably expect a late 2022 or early 2023 release date.
