Spoiler alert for the newest episode of Dexter: New Blood. David Zayas, who played Detective Angel Batista on the original Dexter series, came back to portray the beloved character on the latest Dexter: New Blood episode. On the fifth installment of the crime miniseries, Angel talked to the Chief of Police Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) about a case involving multiple missing women. Unknown to Batista is that Angela is currently dating his long-time friend Dexter Morgan. Zayas was in the main cast of Dexter for all of its eight seasons. On the sequel show, he showed up as a speaker at a law enforcement convention. Bishop turned to him for advice on the previously mentioned case.
Back in September, Entertainment Weekly teased that a surprise cast member from the original Dexter series would return for the new program. This week, Zayas talked about what coming back as the character meant to him in an interview with EW. Zayas explained: “It brought back amazing memories. It was so much fun to be back.” He went onto say this about the experience.
So far, Batista has only appeared in one interview. Will he return in future episodes, and perhaps interact with Dexter himself? David Zayas teases, “You’re going to have to wait and see!” he then goes further to tease where Batista is at in life and how that plays into the new iteration of the series.
Was David Zayas happy with his character arc in the original finale? He offers these thoughts.
David Zayas was surprised when Showtime announced the revival, “After the first few years [when they didn’t reprise the show after the 2013 finale], I just figured that was it. So when I heard about this, I was very surprised.” Does he want Angel to finally learn Dexter’s true identity as a serial killer? “That’s a difficult question to answer, but I guess I’m going to say that ultimately truth is going to set you free. So I would say yes.” He goes onto say this about his iconic Fedora and its place ub TV history. Was the fedora always the plan?
While Angel did not get to see Dexter again, there is a possibility for that to happen in the future. With a span of 10 episodes, the season of Dexter: New Blood with Michael C. Hall is already halfway over. Viewers can see new installments of the series on Showtime on Sundays.
