Kraven the Hunter isn’t very far from release. The anti-hero origin story set within Sony’s Spider-Man Universe will follow Sergei Kravinoff’s quest to become the most excellent hunter. It will be set in the present day. Aaron Taylor-Johnson will play the titular character, who happens to Spider-Man’s most formidable foe in the comics. The film is under production and is being directed by Triple Frontier’s J.C. Chandor.
Earlier, actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson had revealed that Kraven the Hunter will be shot entirely on location. The actor said that his character would have some CGI assistance. Still, the film’s environmental setting and locations would be natural. Now, again, the actor has weighed in on the significance of Kraven the Hunter being shot on location. In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Aaron Taylor-Johnson emphasized how the on-location production of his upcoming film varies from other superhero films. He said,
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Aaron Taylor-Johnson is right at the part where he distinguishes Kraven the Hunter from other Marvel productions. Other SSU films, Venom and Morbius, have also been filmed on-set using the green screen. Marvel Studios’ MCU productions also heavily use the green screen in most sequences. With Kraven the Hunter being filmed on-location, it is creating somewhat precedence in superhero films’ production.
Kraven being shot entirely on location is going to make all the difference. It’s going to add something really beautiful to our personal story. It also sets Kraven apart from that Marvel stage look. It’s important for this character to be in the real world. It’s important for the authenticity of the story. When you’re running on streets barefoot, you take in those elements and play within that.
Besides carrying this distinguished achievement, Kraven The Hunter is believed to be heavy on action, teasing animalistic combat sequences. Aaron Taylor-Johnson filmed for the film in London. Earlier during the initial stages, he revealed how he had undergone stunt training for the film and had closely worked with J.C. Chandor as they were bunking up in London in preparation for the shoot.
Kraven The Hunter May Portray The Character in a Different Light
Marvel Comics
Though Kraven The Hunter, in the comics, takes pride in hunting down the animals with his bare hands, we might see this character iteration go in a different direction. Aaron Taylor-Johnson has described his character as an ‘animal lover.’ The actor further revealed that Sergei is more of a ‘protector of the natural world.
The story would not feature him as a villain per se but will follow him down the path of an anti-hero personality. The film has also assembled a great star cast, many playing crucial comic book characters. Fred Hechinger plays Dimitri/Chameleon, Sergei’s brother in the comics, and Ariana DeBose plays Calypso, Sergei’s love interest in the film. Christopher Abbott has been cast as another Marvel Comics villain, The Foreigner. Alessandro Nivola and Russell Crowe also star in the movie.
There’s no telling if Kraven The Hunter will feature any reference to the adjutant Marvel Cinematic Universe, but hopefully, it will have a tremendous solo story to tell.
Kraven The Hunter is now in post-production and has wrapped filming in June 2022. The film will release on January 13, 2023.
