Though much isn’t known about The Son In Law, the series is where the east meets the west. With some cast members officially announced, the show will have a bunch of new Indian actors and established Indian Hindi film industry actors. Let’s shed some light on everything we know about the upcoming series.
The Son In Law: The Plot
Netflix
As we mentioned earlier, there isn’t much revealed about the show or the storyline. The official synopsis, as reported by Deadline, states:
The show will be led by the main character named Jake. He is a divorced man with a 21-year-old daughter who never once thought he would find love again, but then came Asha. Unfortunately for Jake, a hard-working plumbing contractor, the problem is that he comes from a solidly middle-class background, unlike Asha. The latter comes from a super-wealthy family and is basically South Asian royalty.
Jake is madly in love with Asha and wants to marry her, but the classic Indian twist comes where he needs to go to her father to ask for his blessing. However, the bigger problem than her father is her loving but extremely controlling mother. She makes virtually no effort to hide her feelings about Jake being completely wrong for Asha.
The Son In Law: The Cast
NBC
The network has already finalized the star for the show’s lead, Jake, as reported by Deadline. This Is Us star Chris Sullivan has been officially roped in to play the lead on The Son In Law. Sullivan being cast in a new show as the lead is quite common, especially when a massively popular broadcast series ends. In fact, Sullivan is the second actor from This Is Us who has been signed on for a pilot. The first is Milo Ventimiglia, who has been tapped to play the lead in another upcoming ABC drama called The Company You Keep, a project developed through his company DiVide Pictures.
As for Asha, the network has roped in Reema Sampat to play the female lead opposite Chris Sullivan. Her character is a practical, optimistic, and unpretentious architect from an affluent Indian family. Asha is a divorcee who is happy to find love in her current boyfriend, Jake. The duo lives together in Queens in a small but modest house. Sampat is known for her roles in various movies and series. Most notably, Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black as Shruti Chambal. In addition, she has also featured in Netflix’s Marvel’s Jessica Jones, NBC’s Shades of Blue, James Franco’s The Pretenders, an independent feature named The Man Behind the Camera, and Blood Surf.
Simhan is most notably known for her recurring role on The Flash and has guest-starred on Fox’s The Resident and CBS’ Evil. Besides these, she has also guest-starred on many series like Fresh Off The Boat, How to Get Away With Murder, The Magicians, NCIS: Los Angeles, New Girl, and Major Crimes.
Kher and Simhan will be playing the role of Asha’s parents, Om and Khushi Mehta, respectively. The couple lives in a sprawling 18,000-square-foot Fifth Avenue penthouse and hobnobs with an A-list circle of celebrities and friends. Om is the conductor of the New York Philharmonic and yet is relatively modest in the way he lives. His wife, Khushi, is an attractive charmer and a social butterfly who hosts lavish soirees at her Fifth Avenue penthouse.
