Adam Sandler fans have been given their first look at his new team-up with Jennifer Aniston in Netflix’s Murder Mystery 2, along with the release date for the comedy movie. Murder Mystery was a surprise hit on Netflix when it premiered, especially considering critics tore down the film before and just after its launch. However, audiences gave the film the biggest opening weekend viewership ever for a Netflix movie at that time, with over 30 million views in the first three days. Now, three years later, the pair are hoping to recapture whatever it was that made the film such a crowd-puller.
In Murder Mystery 2, Sandler will reprise his role as NY police officer Nick Spitz, who, along with his wife Audrey, played by Aniston, end up embroiled in a dangerous international adventure beyond their control. Currently, there is not much known about the movie’s plot, but the new image shows Aniston and a beat-up Sandler in Paris speaking into a mobile phone. To find out what this means, fans will have to wait until March for the film’s Netflix premiere…or at least until we get a trailer to shed a little light on the situation. Was Murder Mystery A Genuine Hit, or Just a Fluke?

Like many of Netflix’s biggest hits of the last few years, Murder Mystery somehow managed to pull in huge viewer numbers despite seeming to please only a small number of those who reviewed it. Rotten Tomatoes scores for both critics and audience reviews are almost identical, with a respective 44% and 43% telling the story of how the movie went down.
Whether it was a lack of other options or the name power of Sandler and Aniston alone, Murder Mystery managed to ensnare 170 million hours watched in its first 28 days of release, which immediately found the movie a position in the Top 10 Netflix movies ever. Other movies have since overtaken the film, but the sequel will now be hoping to once again stake a claim among the all-time top ten.
Murder Mystery 2 wrapped filming in April 2022 after a two-month shoot. As part of Sandler’s Netflix deal, which has also seen the release of Hubie Halloween, The Do-Over, and The Ridiculous 6, Netflix will be hoping for another hit, and Sandler will be looking to improve on the critical annihilation that his previous comedies have received.
Although the mystery movie is making something of a comeback, with Knives Out and its sequel Glass Onion leading the way with a very high bar, Murder Mystery 2 will have to go some way to prove itself against the competition. Of course, the film does still have its two lead stars, and for those looking for an easy way to pass a couple of hours, Murder Mystery 2 could end up being the perfect background distraction for many Netflix subscribers when it arrives on the platform in March.
