Less than two weeks ago, Rick and Morty’s co-creator Justin Roiland was charged with two counts of felony domestic violence related to a 2020 incident in Orange County. Speculation surrounding his continuation on the Adult Swim cult sensation has brewed since the announcement of the charges earlier this month. On Tuesday, Adult Swim officially released a statement that the network has cut ties with Roiland, quelling any further speculation about his involvement moving forward.

Roiland’s roles as Rick, Morty and additional characters within the series are expected to be recast, according to sources close to the franchise. Rick and Morty is on the heels of its seventh season, having just concluded Season 6 in December 2022. Adult Swim had previously renewed the series in 2018 for 70 additional episodes across an unspecified amount of seasons as part of a new long-term deal between the creators and the network. So far, 61 episodes of the series have aired, but given the success of the multiverse-traveling space adventure series, the likelihood of Rick and Morty reaching 100 episodes is probable.

Rick and Morty is just one of several shows that Roiland is associated with. He serves as the co-creator, writer, and voice of the main character Korvo in Hulu’s Solar Opposites. The 2020 alien adult sitcom has been well-received by both critics and audiences, set streaming records as the platform’s top Hulu Original comedy premiere, and secured a renewal for a fifth season last year. His latest series, Koala Man, debuted on Hulu January 9, and he serves as an executive producer on the project. As it stands, there is no word on Roiland’s future involvement in Solar Opposites or Koala Man.
Justin Roiland Steps Down From His Position at Squanch Games
In addition to Tuesday’s late announcement of Adult Swim’s relationship termination with Roiland, the long-time writer, voice actor, and animator is also leaving another company in light of his legal issues. The news broke via social media that Roiland is stepping down from his position at Squanch Games.
The company announced in the post that Roiland has resigned from his position within Squanch Games. Although the post does not mention Roiland’s legal battles nor condemn his actions, the company vows to move forward in a way that continues to bring quality video games that their fans love.
