For MCU and Wanda Maximoff fans, Disney+ 2021’s release of WandaVision and the announcement of Agatha: Coven of Chaos are everything. WandaVision premiered on January 15, 2021, and those who found themselves glued to Disney+ Friday nights weekly were riveted. Early on, WandaVision showed colossal potential and made good on that potential earning Marvel’s first Emmy Award. And no episode was more enthralling than the series finale, which featured an epic standoff between Wanda and her neighbor Agnes. Agnes’ special reveal became a highlight of the season, raising more than a few questions like, who exactly was Agnes’ true persona Agatha?

Agatha has been penned as one of Earth’s most powerful witches in the Marvel Universe. She is ageless as there is no pinpoint to her beginnings. However, she is said to have ties with the Witches of Salem. However, a time traveler named Firestar enters Agatha’s life and becomes pivotal to her arc. Firestar plays an essential role in Agatha’s decision to leave Salem, Massachusetts, starting her own coven and town. In her departure from Salem, a group of witches follows, and they eventually form their own coven and build the city of New Salem. This is only the beginning of her story.

According to Marvel, Agatha’s powers include casting precognitive, communicative, analytical, or manipulative spells. However, Agatha is more than merely a witch. Agatha is also a governess, mentor, and instructor in the practice of magic. She performs the function of nanny to Franklin Richards. And she becomes an instructor to Wanda. Agatha’s mentorship of Wanda is rooted in the witch’s desire to help her charge deal with the unstable nature of her powers. According to Marvel, Agatha continued to mentor Wanda until her courtship and marriage to Vision. However, Agatha’s maintain ties to Wanda throughout her life.

Wanda Vision’s Agatha wore a human disguise in the person of Agnes. Agnes was a seemingly understanding and caring neighbor of Wanda and Vision, taking on the TV trope of the nosy neighbor. As fans will later find out, perhaps her surveillance was for a good cause. Regardless Agnes was there through some precarious moments. She was present for Wanda’s magical and accelerated pregnancy and later birth of twin sons, Billy and Tommy.

Despite the oddity of the situation, Agnes appeared to be extremely understanding of the inexplicable phenomena surrounding Wanda. ​Although raising a few questions, it never wholly dawns on Wanda that there might be more to Agnes. Nevertheless, when the Maximoff twins go missing, she discovers a new side of Agnes.

Wanda and Agatha engage in a battle of magic. Finally, Wanda gets the upper hand by using one of Agatha’s spells against her, exclaiming the elder witch has taught her well. In utilizing the spell, Wanda essentially takes on the mantel of whom many fans know to be The Scarlet Witch. Interestingly Wanda’s face-off with Agatha ties back into the larger cinematic universe and release of the summer blockbuster Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Agatha: House of Chaos: The Plot and Fan Theories

Agatha: House of Chaos was initially named Agatha: House of Harkness and falls in phase 5 of the MCU. As a spinoff to WandaVision, the forthcoming series promises to reveal a lot more about Wanda’s witchy neighbor Agnes. Currently, the plot is being kept hushed, making fans speculate what might happen.

What is known is that in Wanda Vision’s finale, Wanda entraps Agatha. So, the logical premise is that Agatha Coven of Chaos will see the witch released and wreaking her brand of havoc in the universe. It is also believed that the series will bring in various characters, especially given Agatha’s ties in cannon material. Some characters that might pop up in the series include characters from X-men or even Dr. Doom himself. According to Screen Rant:

Other characters who could return include White Vision, The Maximoff twins, and Monica Rambeau.

Agatha: House of Chaos: The Cast

The plot is not the only thing remaining a mystery, as most of the cast has yet to be revealed. The only sure thing at this time is Kathryn Hahn’s return as Agatha.

Release Date

There is also yet to be an exact release date. However, according to statements made by Kevin Feige at the Return to Hall H San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) on the phase five rollouts, the show will be released in the late winter of 2023 or early 2024. Given this projected date, the series will fall towards the end of phase five following a host of other releases, including, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Quantumania, Secret Invasion, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Marvels, Loki, Echo, Blade, and Ironheart. That makes one thing sure the possibilities of what Agatha’s House of Chaos could offer are endless.
