It is no secret that Disney and Marvel Studios have had plans for WandaVision’s Agatha Harkness on their agenda for a while, but today’s Disney+ Day announcements saw the official confirmation that Kathryn Hahn’s fun villain will be returning in her own series titled Agatha: House of Harkness. It was first reported last month that there were plans afoot for the gloriously wicked Agatha to get her own spin-off after being such a hit in WandaVision and her many fans will be delighted to get confirmation that she will be back sooner rather than later in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As the Disney+ Day announcements rolled out, dozens of new Marvel series logos, release dates and new series reveals dropped the news of Agatha’s starring vehicle came as one of the bigger early Marvel pieces of news. The series will be written by WandaVision’ s scribe Jac Schaeffer, who will also act as executive producer. Of course it needs no confirmation that Hahn will be reprising her role as the witch who inadvertently helped Wanda find her Scarlett Witch abilities.

Agatha’s time on WandaVision was mostly taken up by the character being a seemingly over the top neighbor of Wanda and Vision, but as the series progressed a darker side of Agatha came out and led to the finale battle between the two witches in which Wanda transformed into Scarlet Witch and Agatha was left defeated and without her powers. Considering Agatha is still around, it is possible that she could be seen in the future of the Marvel Universe, but the series is much more likely to pick up on the brief glimpse of her history considering this area was left unexplored in WandaVision.

A flashback during the last episodes showed Agatha Harkness turning on her coven and absorbing all their power to become a force to be reckoned with, and by the title of House of Harkness, it would suggest a more historical origin story would be suited to both her character and the overall story of Agatha. Marvel don’t tend to allow their best characters to just appear without having a reasonable history, and once again Disney+ will allow them to do what couldn’t probably be done as successfully on the big screen in a movie.

Of course, while Agatha was intriguing in her own right, nothing brings in an audience like a good theme song, and whether it will feature in the series or not - and surely it will in some reworked form - “Agatha All Along” was a cracker of a tune that even managed to find its way to the music charts. Hahn sang on the track but really never expected it to become what it did.

“No! No, I knew I was going to have a theme song, but I actually didn’t know I was going to be singing it until we were midway through shooting it and they were like, ‘Oh, we’re going to need you to sing,’” Kathryn Hahn told Nylon in an interview. “I was like, ‘Great,’ but I had zero expectations that it was going to be the thing that would pop out. I was like, ‘Wait, what?’ It was really like it was [happening on] a different planet - it was like another us or another me, just this other thing that was happening. Someone was like, ‘You topped the Biebs!’ And I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ The whole thing was so very, very surreal.”

More news of Agatha: House of Harkness will no doubt come in good time, but for now just knowing the series is in development is enough.
