According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alex Wolff, famous for his roles in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Patriots Day, and most recently for his appearance in M. Night Shyamalan’s Old, will be joining the all-star ensemble of Christopher Nolan’s next, Oppenheimer. The film is set to be a biopic of J. Robert Oppenheimer and will focus on his efforts and the adverse impact the scientist faced for developing and inventing the atomic bomb in the infamous Manhattan Project.

For now, Alex Wolff’s character details have not been revealed. However, one can be sure that even in a small capacity, he will have a significant role in the film. Wolff is the latest to join the film, which has already cast more than thirty actors to appear in the film, including the likes of Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett Dane DeHaan, Kenneth Branagh, David Dastmalchian, James D’Arcy, and Matthias Schweighöfer.

However, the surprise casting in the film was of Cillian Murphy, who’ll be playing the titular lead role in the film. Murphy has always proven that he’s a quality actor but has failed to grab a lead role in a big production; however, critical acclaim directed towards his performance in Peaky Blinders has finally led Nolan to put the actor in a position where he can give his best. Moreover, there possibly couldn’t be any other director who’d have realized Murphy’s potential, with whom he has worked in a majority of his projects, including The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, and Dunkirk.

Alex Wolff’s Triumph With Oppenheimer

Appearing in a Christopher Nolan film would be a major addition to Wolff’s resume, who has given some successful performances recently in films like Pig, starring Nicolas Cage; bad Education, starring Hugh Jackman, and Hereditary, starring Toni Collete. Nolan is known to be very secretive about his projects and often successfully avoids media attention during the film’s shoots, hence, the secrecy behind Alex Wolff’s role. Though we can expect some details about the actor’s character in the film, especially if it’s a character based on a biographical figure, significant to the story the film is delving into. In any case, Wolff probably would be eager to just be on the set with the acclaimed director.

Oppenheimer is currently sticking to a strict shooting schedule in New Mexico and is slated to release on July 21, 2023. This would be the first Nolan film since Memento, which would not be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures because of differences caused between the studio and the director over the former’s decision to opt for a simultaneous HBO Max release. Nolan, a theatre experience advocate, has kept himself away from streaming releases as his films, which he shoots on IMAX, are called for a theatrical viewing experience. Oppenheimer will eventually be distributed by Universal Pictures.

The exact plot details of the films are under wraps, and it’s unclear what aspect of the scientist’s life the film will focus on. Interestingly, Nolan’s previous release Tenet had a sequence where actors Dimple Kapadia and John David Washington discuss Oppenheimer’s fears and horrors upon completion of the atomic bomb and realization of its global impact. It’s possible that the scientist’s reservations regarding his destructive creation would make a massive contribution to the film.

Oppenheimer will reunite Nolan (who’s also serving as the screenwriter) with cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema (Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet) and Oscar-winning music composer Ludwig Göransson. Nolan will also produce the film via his and his wife’s company Syncopy Inc.
