For Alison Brie, there hasn’t been anything worse happen to her career than when her pro wrestling series GLOW got the boot at Netflix. Debuting on Netflix in 2017, GLOW is inspired by the real-life pro wrestling league Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, aka GLOW. After three seasons, the show had been renewed for season 4, leading Brie and the rest of the cast to prepare for another season. In 2020, Netflix reversed course and canceled the series, shutting down production on season 4 due to the pandemic.
Speaking with Decider to promote her new film Spin Me Round, Brie reflected on the surprise cancelation of GLOW at Netflix. Brie describes the situation as the “great heartbreak” of her career, though she remains grateful for the memories that she has of working on the show.
Brie agrees that it was shocking when it was announced that Netflix was shelving GLOW, but at the same time, she recognizes that there were much more important things to worry about.
“It’s the great heartbreak of my career. But it will forever live on as, like, this great thing. I loved working on it – maybe more than anything I’ve worked on! – and I miss it a lot. But I feel very grateful for the time I had on the show.”
GLOW also starred Betty Gilpin, Sydelle Noel, Britney Young, Britt Baron, Kate Nash, Gayle Rankin, and Marc Maron. It was created for Netflix by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch.
“Yeah, it was surprising! But it was sort of eclipsed by the shock of everything that was happening globally. [Laughs] You know, so in a way it was almost like it put things in perspective.”
