After 9 years, Amanda Bynes’ conservatorship has been terminated, meaning that it has come to an end at the order of a judge. During the brief hearing, Judge Roger L. Lund congratulated “Ms. Bynes” and wished her “good luck,“adding, “the conservatorship is no longer needed or required,” said the judge. “She has done everything the court has asked.”

In a statement shared exclusively to PEOPLE via her lawyer David A. Esquibias, Bynes, 35, broke her silence yesterday after a judge ruled on her conservatorship on Tuesday. The former actress-turned-fashion student expressed her gratitude while sharing insight into her future plans, telling PEOPLE that:

In August 2013, the court granted Bynes’ mother, Lynn Organ, temporary conservatorship over the star after she allegedly set a driveway on fire and was placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold. Then, in October 2014, Lynn was granted full conservatorship over her daughter. Over the last nine years, Bynes has been largely residing in a sober living community and staying out of the spotlight and working on her degree at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, having previously earned an associate’s degree in 2019.

Following today’s decision by the judge to terminate my conservatorship, I would like to thank my fans for their love and well wishes during this time. I would also like to thank my lawyer and my parents for their support over the last nine years. In the last several years, I have been working hard to improve my health so that I can live and work independently, and I will continue to prioritize my well-being in this next chapter. I am excited about my upcoming endeavors — including my fragrance line — and look forward to sharing more when I can.

“She believes her condition is improved and protection of the court is no longer necessary,” Bynes’ lawyer said when she initially filed to end her conservatorship in February.

Amanda Bynes Had Support of Fans and Cast Mates

According to PEOPLE, Bynes took to Instagram in February in a since-deleted post, addressing Tuesday’s conservatorship hearing and thanking her fans for all their support as she went through the sometimes difficult hearing process (it’s not a given a judge will terminate a conservatorship even if all parties agrees). “What’s up Instagram. Amanda Bynes here. My court date is coming up in two weeks,” she said. “I want to thank you all for your love and support. Peace out.”

Indeed, it seems that those fans have stuck it out with Bynes throughout her hearings, much as they did with Britney Spears during her much lengthier battle to end what appeared to be an abusive conservatorship last November. In fact, a trio of #FreeBritney activists were at the courthouse to support Bynes and to continue to raise awareness about conservatorship abuse.

Bynes rose to fame as a child actor on Nickelodeon’s All That in the 90s, before starring in a slew of hit movies in the early 2000s. Two of Bynes’ former All That cast mates were present at hearing to offer their support. “We hope to speak to her and celebrate with her in some way,” said Leon Frierson. Fellow Nickelodeon co-star Christy Knowings added, “We would love to see Amanda.”

The former actress also has the support of her fiancé Paul Michael. Since she filed the end to her conservatorship in February, she has moved into a Los Angeles, California, rental with him, as an important step toward her independence.
