In the announcement, Briggs and her assistant said:
They then warned the fans to temper their enthusiasm for the announcement:
Even so, news like this is very exciting for an author. The chance to see the world and characters they create brought to life is an amazing thing and one that many authors only hope for.
Who Is Mercy Thompson?
Author Patricia Briggs
Mercedes “Mercy” Thompson is the main character of a series of books written by New York Times bestselling author Patricia Briggs. The series is an urban fantasy set on Earth, where magic and werewolves are very common.
Mercy is the daughter of a Blackfoot Native American father and a white teenage mother. She is a Volkswagen mechanic living in the Tri-Cities area of Washington State. As a part of her Native American heritage, though, she has gained the ability to shapeshift into a coyote. When she first shifted into a coyote as a baby, it frightened her mother, who left her with people who she thought would be able to raise her better.
Mercy being a Native American woman would also serve to check off representation boxes for Hollywood. With multiple non-white characters in the series, a Mercy Thompson series would open up numerous such casting possibilities for what could be a long-term project.
While, so far, it has only been announced as having the option picked up, the possibility of a Mercy Thompson series is an exciting one. MovieWeb will follow the progress and report on a production when it is announced.
