Actress and comedian Amy Schumer has weighed in with her response over what she saw happen live at the Academy Awards on Sunday night. At the awards ceremony, Schumer served as one of three co-hosts alongside Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes. Like everyone else in the building, along with millions watching worldwide, the Trainwreck star was left shocked by the act of violence carried out by a Best Lead Actor nominee toward an award presenter.
It goes without saying, but this refers to King Richard actor Will Smith physically attacking Chris Rock on the stage over a joke made about Jada Pinkett Smith. There has been heavy criticism leveled at the Academy for allowing a presenter to be slapped across the face on live television, made worse by awarding him with a prestigious award that was met with a standing ovation by many in the crowd. Critics have said that this condones Smith’s violence and rewards it in a big way.

Others have different opinions, but for her part, Schumer felt appalled by what she witnessed that night. On Wednesday, she posted on Instagram a message to promote her Hulu series Life and Beth and her upcoming comedy tour. She then got serious by noting how she still feels “traumatized” over what she saw. However, she credits Rock with how he handled the situation and is looking forward to these negative feelings associated with the show to go away.
“I think we can all agree that the best way to unpack what happened is to stream my series Life and Beth and see me on tour this fall. But for real. Still triggered and traumatized. I love my friend Chris Rock and believe he handled it like a pro. Stayed up there and gave an Oscar to his friend Questlove and the whole thing was so disturbing. So much pain in Will Smith anyway I’m still in shock and stunned and sad. Im proud of myself and my cohosts. But yeah. Waiting for this sickening feeling to go away from what we all witnessed.”
Will Smith’s Actions Have Garnered Condemnation From Celebrities

Other Hollywood stars have been criticizing Rock and the Academy for the incident. The Batman star Zoe Kravitz took to Instagram to post an image of the dress she wore to the Oscars ceremony that evening, casually noting in the caption that it was the outfit she wore at the show where “we are apparently assaulting people on stage now.” Comedian and actor Jim Carrey also found the situation disturbing and said Smith should have been arrested.
“I was sickened. I was sickened by the standing ovation," Carrey told Gayle King on CBS, unhappy with the Oscars crowd applauding Smith after the attack. “I felt like Hollywood is just spineless, en masse, and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we are not the cool club anymore.”
Carrey added: “He should’ve been [escorted out or arrested]. [Chris Rock] doesn’t want the hassle, I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million dollars. Because that video is going to be there forever. It’s going to be ubiquitous. That insult is going to last a very long time. If you want to yell from the audience, and disapprove, or have a disapproval, or say something or whatever… you do not have the right to walk on stage and smack somebody on the face because they said words.”
