6 Corazón
Montefiore
Corazón is one of de Armas’ lesser-known films, however, it’s also a role in which she was able to fully showcase her talents and range as an actor. She plays a young sex worker who discovers that she is suffering from a critical illness, who then has to fight for her visa in order to get the treatment that she needs. The film is based on a true story, and her co-star is Demian Bichir, who plays Dr. Mario Garcia, the doctor trying his best to get Elena the help she needs. The movie explores the stigma that is faced by sex workers in a heart-wrenching story of discrimination and injustice. De Armas excels in her role, and it deserves much wider recognition.

5 Sergio
Netflix
Sergio is a film based on a UN diplomat, humanitarian and negotiator, following him as he navigates difficult missions during the U.S invasion of Iraq. De Armas plays his love interest, Carolina Larriera, who is a UN economic consultant involved in dangerous missions. This is another film that is based on a true story, this time, of Sergio Vieira de Mello. It’s an emotional and action-packed film, and de Armas excels in her role.
4 War Dogs
Warner Bros.
War Dogs is another film, again, that is based on a true story. This biographical crime-comedy is inspired by the true story of two young men who won a $300 million contract from the Pentagon, using the Iraq War as an opportunity to become arms dealers. Their only job was to provide arms to America’s allies in Afghanistan. The movie stars Jonah Hill and Miles Teller as Efraim Diveroli and David Packouz, respectively, and this film is directed by Todd Phillips. De Armas plays Iz, David’s wife, who is in the dark as to what her husband is doing since they are both opposed to the Iraq war. The film is a story which touches on greed and moral corruption and has a refreshing stance on political issues in cinema.
3 No Time to Die
Sony
De Armas’ career excelled to new heights when she starred in the James Bond film, No Time to Die. She plays Paloma, a CIA agent that becomes key to Bond’s mission throughout the film. The film is the 5th instalment that featured Daniel Craig as the leading role, and de Armas was an excellent addition to the franchise.
2 Knives Out
Knives Out was directed by Rian Johnson and features and ensemble cast that includes Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Daniel Craig, Chirstopher Plummer, and Michael Shannon. The mystery film sees de Armas take the leading role of Marta, a nurse to a wealthy author (Plummer). After he dies, there is suspicion surrounding the circumstances of his death due to his elevated status. Knives Out is not short on twists and turns, and is a real career highlight that shows how de Armas can succeed in a leading role. She received a lot of critical praise for her work, including a Globe nomination, in addition to winning a Satellite award and Spanish Actors Union award her talent.
1 Blade Runner 2049
Blade Runner 2049 is a sequel to the original Blade Runner, and was responsible for putting de Armas directly into the global spotlight. She stars alongside Ryan Gosling, playing a leading role as the artificial intelligence Gosling’s Blade Runner falls for, known as Joi. Harrison Ford returns to the franchise, and the film also features performances from Jared Leto and Dave Bautista. Blade Runner 2049 performed well at the box office, as well as during awards season, and holds up against its predecessor.
