HBO Max has ordered more And Just Like That…, the new series that serves as a continuation of Sex and the City. Premiering on HBO Max last year, And Just Like That… was pretty well-received by fans of the original show, a feat that is certainly not always guaranteed when revisiting popular franchises from years past. There had been rumors of an imminent renewal, and now it’s been made official with the streamer announcing the spinoff will be back for season 2.
“We have been delighted by the cultural conversation generated by these characters and their stories, set in a world we already know and love so much,” HBO Max’s head of original content Sarah Aubrey said of the renewal, per CNN. “We are proud of the work Michael Patrick King and our wonderful writers, producers, cast and crew have done to bring these stories to the screen. We can’t wait for fans to see what’s in store for season 2!”

Series executive producer Michael Patrick King added, “I am delighted and excited to tell more stories about these vibrant, bold characters - played by these powerful, amazing actors. The fact is, we’re all thrilled. And Just like That… our Sex life is back.”
With the renewal official, we can presume season 2 will bring back its three franchise stars: Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis. As of now, HBO hasn’t officially confirmed which cast members will be returning. The show’s cast also included Mario Cantone, David Eigenberg, Evan Handler, Sara Ramierz, and Saira Choudhury. Willie Garson also appeared in And Just Like That… to reprise his Sex and the City role before he passed away last year.
Will Kim Cattrall Appear in And Just Like That… Season 2?
HBO
There was a certain risk in bringing back Sex and the City without all four of the original show’s leads. That is what killed tentative plans to develop a third movie and it had seemed that the franchise had come to an end, as there was little faith at the time that fans would accept just three of the four main characters returning. It has since worked out just fine with the response as fans have been largely receptive to the new show, even without Cattrall’s Samantha Jones.
Some fans may wonder if the success of And Just Like That… may convince Cattrall to return for a cameo. In story, it would make sense, as an off-camera Samantha has been keeping in contact with Carrie Bradshaw throughout the series. But fans should not bet on Cattrall coming back. Sarah Jessica Parker believes that the things Cattrall has said publicly about her former co-stars has closed the door on that possibility. Even so, the plan is to keep Samantha as a presence on the show, even if fans never physically see the character.
“I don’t think I would [want Cattrall to return], because I think there’s just too much public history of feelings on her part that she’s shared,” Parker previously explained. “Samantha’s not gone. Samantha’s present, and I think was handled with such respect and elegance. She wasn’t villainized. She was a human being who had feelings about a relationship, so I think we found a way to address it which was necessary and important for people that loved her.”
The first season of And Just Like That… is streaming on HBO Max. Season 2 does not yet have a release date.
