And Just Like That is a reboot sequel of the popular HBO series Sex and the City. Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis return to the screen as Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York, respectively, to give fans a more modern and mature reboot of the popular show. While Kim Cattrall is absent from the series, leading many fans to become skeptical of the series altogether, And Just Like That covers all aspects of life including divorce, grief, sexuality, and even addiction. The series has been recognized as being more inclusive than its predecessor, receiving the Seal of Authentic Representation from the Ruderman Family Foundation, as well as the ReFrame Stampe for giving people with disabilities and those with underrepresented gender identities more screen-time.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
While the show was originally meant to be a simple miniseries, And Just Like That has since been renewed for a second season. With the cast set to return for another round of episodes, it’s only right that we reflect on the best aspects of season 1 while awaiting the arrival of the second season. One of the best aspects of the first season was indeed Miranda’s complex storyline, which showed us a variety of new aspects to her character that have never been revealed before. Here’s why Miranda had the best storyline in season one of And Just Like That.
Exploration of Her Sexuality
HBO Max
In the first season of And Just Like That, Miranda is introduced to Carrie’s radio co-host Che Diaz. Che bonds with Miranda and the two wind up forming an intimate relationship that quickly heats up. Not only does this show Miranda in a new light, considering that she is in the process of getting a divorce, it is also a new expression of Miranda’s sexuality as Che identifies as non-binary. While this may seem like something that is not a big deal to some, others will see this as an enlightening view into Miranda’s sexuality. While it’s unclear if this aspect of her character is new or if it has always been present, And Just Like That brings Miranda into the modern world of dating, showing her sexuality to be more fluid than we previously thought.
Dives Into Complexities of Marriage / Relationships
The biggest aspect to Miranda’s season 1 storyline of And Just Like That is her asking for a divorce from Steve. While the two have had their troubles over the years, they have always managed to work through their differences. Despite everything they have been through, Miranda asks Steve for a divorce. While this may seem rather uncharacteristic of the typically rational Miranda — and, in fact, sparked complaints from fans — the reality of her decision is that, with age, she no longer wishes to waste time being a part of things that don’t bring her joy. This request leads both Steve and the audience to think about the realities of their marriage, also leaving Steve heartbroken in the process while Miranda wishes to move on with the new love in her life.
Alcoholism Among Women
Miranda’s feelings of being stuck are explored all throughout And Just Like That. However, between her impulse decision to have sex with Che rather than take care of Carrie, who just had surgery, and her request for a divorce from Steve, Miranda’s behavior has become noticeably erratic. One coping mechanism she uses to try to escape her mundane lifestyle is her excessive drinking throughout the series. While some fans have argued that Miranda’s behavior is beyond belief, the drinking is most likely the reason that Miranda’s decisions are impulsive and irrational. Alcoholism often goes unnoticed in women and is seen as a social activity rather than an unhealthy coping mechanism. This addition to the storyline is also a self-critique of Sex and the City, which glamorized drinking, when the reality of alcoholism is an ugly truth that is now being exposed in Miranda’s storyline.
Opens Up Potential New Love Interest For Carrie
Thanks to Miranda divorcing Steve and Big’s sudden passing, Carrie and Steve are now both single. While many And Just Like That audience members weren’t sure this was going anywhere, after Carrie and Steve spend some time together painting a women’s shelter, the two bond when Steve saves Carrie’s ring from going down the drain. The heart-to-heart between them is not only one of the best moments of season 1, but it opens up the possibilities for a new romance to bloom between Steve and Carrie. This may seem far-fetched, but many fans are in fact rooting for the ship to set sail. Of course, with John Corbett returning as Aidan in season 2 of And Just Like That, one of Carrie’s most infamous love interests in Sex and the City, this may seem more like a fantasy than anything.
