The official trailer for Andor is here, and it promises an entirely new direction for the Star Wars saga. Gritty, intense, and action-packed, Andor stars Diego Luna as thief-turned-rebel spy Cassian Andor, who first appeared in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Andor takes place five years before the events of Rogue One and follows the titular character as a thief drawn into the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. But there’s been a slight delay in the release date. Andor’s Disney+ premiere has been pushed back by three weeks to September 21. You can check out the trailer below.
The official plot synopsis for Andor reads:
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
The fan reactions were mixed when Lucasfilm announced a Rogue One prequel focused on Cassian Andor, but the situation seems to have changed now. The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi, two highly anticipated series centered on fan-favorite legacy characters turned out to be massive disappointments, proving that mere fan service won’t suffice the viewers. And taking a page from The Mandalorian, Andor aims to tell an original story about new characters in a time period that hasn’t been explored much in live-action Star Wars films and shows.
“The Andor series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.”
Andor Will Be Unlike Any Other Star Wars TV Show
Disney+
Andor looks like a breath of fresh air, focusing on fascinating new characters and employing Rogue One’s gritty storytelling style. However, as the trailer indicates, there will be plenty of adventure and space battles, along with espionage and deception as well.
Andor is created by Tony Gilroy, a Hollywood veteran known for writing some of the best thrillers of the last century: the Bourne trilogy, Michael Clayton, and State of Play. Gilroy seems like the perfect choice to flesh out Cassian Andor’s backstory. Andor has already been renewed for a 12-episode second season, with much of the cast and crew returning. Diego Luna has also teased a very different tone for the series and an unbelievable transformation for his character, who is not yet the man who’d sacrifice himself in Rogue One. Luna told Total Film:
Andor also stars Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, Fiona Shaw, Forest Whitaker, and Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma. The first three episodes of Andor will drop on Disney+ on September 21. Also, take a peek at the stunning new poster below.
“We find him in a place where he’s not aware of how capable he is of transforming or being part of change or executing such a sacrifice, but he is the man that comes out from fighting since he was six years old. He’s a very interesting, dark, wounded person. You’re not going to believe that he’s capable of what he does in Rogue One.”
