Andor will be different from other Star Wars entries in the Disney+ catalog. The show has already been described as being influenced by the Bourne series, which is a steep departure from shows like The Book of Boba Fett or Obi-Wan Kenobi. In addition, projects like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka rely on previously established characters, whether they were introduced in live-action or in animated shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

The Mandalorian has featured some significant cameos across its two seasons, with Luke Skywalker and Ahsoka making an appearance in the series before returning in The Book of Boba Fett. Of course, Obi-Wan Kenobi starred several characters who are the protagonists of the live-action prequels, including the titular character played by Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen returning as Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader. However, Andor will be different, according to the showrunner Tony Gilroy. He recently spoke with IGN and claims the crew avoided fan service at all costs and instead focused on telling a great story throughout the initial 12 episodes of the show.

“We didn’t want to do anything that was fan service.” Gilroy says, “We never wanted to have anything… the mandate in the very beginning was that it would be as absolutely non-cynical as it could possibly be, that the show would just be real and honest.” Fans can see how Andor stacks up to the rest of the Disney+ Star Wars shows when it arrives on the streaming service later this week, on Sept. 21.

Andor Will Still Feature Some Familiar Characters

Andor may stay away from some of the bigger cameos available within the galaxy far, far away. However, that doesn’t mean everyone in the series will be unrecognizable. Andor is based on the story of Cassian Andor, the rebel we first saw in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Forest Whitaker portrayed Saw Gerrera in the film, a character first introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In addition, Rebel Alliance leader Mon Mothma, played by Genevieve O’Reilly, will make an appearance in Andor. Gilroy tells IGN that their presence isn’t to please fans but because they are crucial to the plot of the series.

“We will be introducing people along the way. I don’t think it’s any secret that Forest Whitaker is in the show… Saw Gerrera is in the show. There will be some other people. But when we bring them, we bring them because we need them and because there’s really some protein there, there’s something for them to really do.”

The official synopsis for the series from Disney+ Media reads: “The Andor series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.” Look to Disney+ on Sept. 21 to see Andor lead the Rebel Alliance against the ever-growing Galactic Empire.
