Sir Anthony Hopkins had something to say on his 84th birthday in a new video posted to Twitter. The oldest-ever Best Actor Oscar winner expressed how lucky he felt just to be alive at this point in his life, stating he doesn’t quite know how he’s made it to this point. Hopkins also notes his frustrations in the constant bickering and finger-pointing he’s been seeing in recent years, and in his speech, the actor encourages everyone to finally put these differences aside so we can all enjoy our lives as best we can moving forward. You can watch the video below.

“Good morning world, good morning everyone, happy healthy 2022 coming up!” Hopkins exclaims in the video. “We shall overcome and we’ll be healthier and better. I want to say greetings to everyone. Today’s my 84th birthday, and I quite honestly can’t account for any of it. I don’t know how I got here. My life has been pretty extraordinary. I cannot take credit for any of it because it’s a mystery to me. I’m just lucky to be alive. All I can say is that I know very little. I’ve learned a few lessons, maybe, along the way. But, finally, I know very little except that life is in progress and this is not a rehearsal. This is the event, being alive. Just being alive.

He adds: “I’m wishing you all a happy new year, and let’s, if it’s possible we all do it, give up the moaning and the complaining and the blaming. Let’s just see if we can get together. Just have a great life. Bring up our young ones of next generations to cut out the blaming and the shaming and all of this stuff. Let’s get on with it and live. We are all imperfect creatures. I have made many, many, many mistakes. I’ve learned a few things over the years. I hope now that kindness and… do the best we can. Let’s drop the blame game and just get on with it. Thank you very much.”

Reaching his mid-80s has done nothing to slow down Hopkins’ efforts as an actor. He’s still frequently appearing in movies and television shows, never once phoning in a performance by impressing critics every time. For 2020’s hit film The Father, Hopkins won Best Actor at the Academy Awards, setting the new record as the oldest-ever winner of the honor. He was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his recent role in the HBO series Westworld in which he played Dr. Robert Ford in the show’s first season.

Hopkins has also appeared in recent movies like The Virtuoso, Where Are You, and Zero Contact. He can be seen in the upcoming drama The Son alongside Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, and Vanessa Kirby. Additionally, Hopkins is working on a period drama from James Gray called Armageddon Time with Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong. Because he can still perform just as well now as ever before, there doesn’t seem to be any signs of Hopkins calling it quits anytime soon.
