Although there is currently no release date set for Anthony Mackie’s first solo movie as Captain America, the actor was recently reported to have revealed that shooting on the film is ready to start in the next few weeks. Mackie’s Sam Wilson was originally given the shield of Steve Rogers in the final scenes of Avengers: Endgame, but it was only after events of Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that Sam finally acknowledged his new role as the second MCU Captain America. However, according to a report from ComicBook.com, Disney has confirmed that Captain America 4 is not set to begin filming.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Anthony Mackie was asked during an interview with Extra TV whether he was filming, to which he replied, “No, I haven’t started filming yet, I start in a few weeks. [I’m eating] a lot of vegetables and chicken breast.” However, there has been confusion of which project the question relates to, and it now seems that he was actually referring to his upcoming shoot on the Peacock series Twisted Metal and not the Captain America sequel.

When it was originally announced that Chris Evans would be stepping away from the role of Captain America following Avengers: Endgame there was a question of who would take over the role in the future. While some wanted to see Steve Rogers’ old friend Bucky Barnes taken on the mantle, having watched the friendship between Rogers and Wilson grow over numerous movies, it made sense that it would be Wilson who Steve would entrust with the legacy of the first Avenger.

However, Wilson had doubts about taking on the role, briefly allowing the ego-centric John Walker to take ownership of the shield in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. His actions during the series made it clear that he was not exactly cut out for the role, and soon Wilson accepted his responsibility and took over the role of Captain America for good. While there are obviously a lot of people wanting to see Sam Wilson in his Captain America role again, it seems that there could still be a bit of a wait.

Captain America 4 Could Still Arrive in Cinemas Within The Next Two Years

     Marvel Studios

While Marvel Studios is keeping its cards close to its chest on their upcoming movies such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder, it has been even less forthcoming about what the future holds for the MCU beyond the arrival of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania next July. There are currently several unannounced Marvel movies set to be released by Disney in late 2023 and 2024, which now looks like including Captain America 4 along with titles that could possibly include the introduction of Blade and the Fantastic Four as well as sequels for Eternals and Shang-Chi.

Although there are currently no details whatsoever about where the new movie could take Sam Wilson’s Cap, the script is being written by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson, suggesting that the film will be picking up some of the story threads set up in that series. However, it should be remembered that fans were in exactly the same situation back in 2018, when Kevin Feige and his team had released no information about what would follow Avengers: Endgame - or Avengers 4 as it was known at the time. However, he did say that plans were in place up to 2024, so while we know nothing about what is coming after next July, it is certain that Feige and co have everything well in hand.
