From the producers of The Morning Show and Big Little Lies comes a new missing person thriller-drama. Vanity Fair describes it as not “just a thriller, and it’s not only a mother-daughter story.” Think of it as Stepmom meets Gone Girl, but also nothing like either of those movies, really. It’s a conundrum that catapulted the source novel to accolades and the top of the bestseller list, a story the producer says “really lives across these genres.”
The Last Thing He Told Me is yet another collaboration between Reese Witherspoon, producer Lauren Neustadter, and Hello Sunshine, Reese Witherspoon’s production company. Their other collaborations include Where The Crawdad Sings, Hulu’s upcoming Tiny Beautiful Things, and a wide variety of best-selling book adaptations. While Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine have a history of producing niche drama cinematic works, The Last Thing He Told Me demonstrates the intention to develop thrillers and more action-filled stories.

The Last Thing He Told Me: The Plot
Hello Sunshine
Apple TV+ announced the official premise of the upcoming series.
The Last Thing He Told Me follows a traditional family story gone awry. Initially, the story follows a relatively common relationship: a recently-remarried father and a daughter with nothing but disdain for her all-too-eager stepmother. Their fractured relationship seems irrevocable, and the family dynamic remains inconsistent as the two struggle to live with one another. In the midst of their struggle, the new family and their life together are upended by the disappearance of the father, Owen. His wife, Hannah, and her stepdaughter, Bailey, are thrown together in the chaotic wake of Owen’s mysterious disappearance.
““The Last Thing He Told Me” follows Hannah, a woman who forms an unexpected relationship with her 16-year-old stepdaughter Bailey while searching for the truth about why her husband has mysteriously disappeared.”
The two must reluctantly work together to learn why Owen truly went missing. Their initial devastation quickly turns to confusion. Why would a loving husband abandon his family? Was there something more to his successful company? What role do Hannah and Bailey have in this complex web of treacherous secrecy? As more information comes to light about Owen’s debauchery, Hannah and Bailey are left scrambling for answers.
