We are used to being fed very small fragments of plot information about upcoming superhero movies from Marvel and DC, so it is not surprising that a newly released synopsis for Jason Momoa’s return as Aquaman has revealed just enough to get fans intrigued about what is to come in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom when it arrives around this time next year. With the sequel having wrapped filming earlier this month, fans are hoping it is not too long before we see more previews of Momoa, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and more in action.
After the unexpected disappointment of the original release of Justice League the previous year, which gave Jason Momoa’s aquatic hero his debut, Aquaman arrived in 2018 to become the monster hit that no one really predicted, overtaking The Dark Knight as the highest-grossing DC film ever with a worldwide gross of over $1.1 billion. With positive reviews all around, it was no time at all before director James Wan began work on the sequel. While the COVID pandemic didn’t help the production, fans were given a first taste of the film at DC FanDome and the latest synopsis update will only make them eager to see more.

While this in itself is not the most detailed description to go on, we do already know that Orm and Black Manta are both back for the sequel, and with Mateen II having already teased an expanded role for his villain, so the question is really which of his adversaries will Aquaman be turning to in order to save the world this time? Considering the ancient power most likely linking to the “lost kingdom” of the title, it would suggest that the alliance will be between Ocean Master and Aquaman, leaving Black Manta as the main villain of the story.
“When an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.”
Thanks mostly to the Covid pandemic, DC has only released two movies this year, and with one of them being the Synder Cut of Justice League, it is fair to say that Warner Bros. is pulling out all the stops for 2022 after once again lagging behind Marvel in both quantity and quality of their superhero output. With The Batman leading the way in 2022 with a March release, DC League of Super-Pets, Black Adam and The Flash flesh out the year before it is rounded off by Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s arrival on December 16th. Additionally, we also have James Gunn’s Peacemaker series making its debut in January, so all in all 2022 is going to be the year the DC hope they can get back on track as so far it looks like it’s going to be an action-packed year for both sides of the comic book coin. With Spider-Man: No Way Home having laid down a gauntlet for DC’s biggest heroes, fans of comic book superhero movies have never had it so good.
