With a very successful bodybuilding career, an extensive and ongoing acting career and tenure as governor of California, most would probably think that their beloved buff Austrian Arnold Schwarzenegger isn’t one to shy away from the public eye. It turns out these days the actor much prefers the company of his adopted livestock and peaceful bike rides to red carpets or press junkets. He’s noticeably never been a familiar face at premieres, likely not favoring the chaotic bustle of such events. However, for one person in particular he will most certainly turn up. Per a report from Cinema Blend, Schwarzenegger dropped by the Avatar: The Way of Water premiere to support his longtime friend and director, James Cameron.

As most know, Schwarzenegger and Cameron have been both personal and professional friends for decades, having worked on multiple films together. From the cult classic True Lies (1994) to three of the four Terminator films, the two have maintained a strong and steadfast friendship. Despite him not having been part of the Avatar franchise (yet?), and him not enjoying the spotlight so much these days, Arnold still chose to show up to this particular premiere with his family in support of Cameron and praise his exceptional work with the animated films.
The Road Ahead for Arnold and Cameron
Given their tight professional bond and history together, it definitely begs the question for fans if the two will reunite once more on future projects. Whether it’s a cameo or even an actual role somewhere within the Avatar universe, or another original project, it remains to be seen. Cameron has lamented that despite its success and his devotion to the franchise he’s built so far, Avatar has definitely kept his hands full the past several years or so, preventing him from pursuing other projects.
“All of you know my good friend Jim Cameron has finally released his Avatar sequel this month! I visited the set last year with his giant water tank and motion capture technology, and it was incredible. His creativity is unmatched, and his vision is so clear. There is no way he would spend this much time on a project and not knock it out of the park.”
While he, Arnold and Linda Hamilton came back together for Terminator: Dark Fate (2019), his creative differences with director Tim Miller led to a mediocre reception of the film, something he was notably unhappy with. He hinted recently on the SmartLess podcast at the possibility of rebooting Terminator from square one, but from a different angle.
Should Cameron find the time and choose to slide back into the director’s chair for a fresh reboot of the beloved action franchise, it likely would be safe to say that Arnold would somehow be involved. Time will tell, if they’ll be back.
“If I were to do another Terminator film and maybe try to launch that franchise again, which is in discussion, but nothing has been decided, I would make it much more about the AI side of it than bad robots gone crazy,”
