Arrested Development is an Emmy award-winning comedy show created by Mitchell Hurwitz. It originally aired from 2003 to 2006, and despite only lasting three seasons, the show became a cult hit. When it was added to the streaming service Netflix, it was clearly in high-demand, and Netflix decided to reboot it for two more seasons. The show tells the story of the Bluth family, the father of which is put in jail for several crimes including fraud and theft. With him out of the picture, Michael Bluth — the “normal” one — takes over the company and family affairs.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Jason Bateman (Michael Bluth) discusses how Arrested Development was never a hit with the masses, but “it was seen and loved by those who hand out jobs in this business.” Its comedy may have lacked commercial appeal, but it allowed the cast to demonstrate comedic acting abilities that were coveted by industry executives. As a result of this, since the show ended, most of the actors have had interesting and exciting opportunities. In particular, the young actors like Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat may be more recognizable for the projects they’ve been part of after Arrested Development than from the show itself. If you’re wondering what the cast has been up to in recent years, look no further.

Jason Bateman

     20th Century Fox

Since the most recent season of Arrested Development, Jason Bateman has mostly been focused on another TV show: Ozark. This program follows another family embroiled in criminal activity, but with a darker tone this time. Bateman’s character Marty is forced to launder money for a drug boss in order to pay his debt. Aside from Ozark, Bateman has been involved in a couple of other projects for Netflix, the movie Thunderforce starring Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer, and a Christmas special for the show Murderville. With Ozark freshly finished, it will be interesting to see where he goes next.

Michael Cera

In the first season of Arrested Development, Michael Cera was just 15 years old when he played George Michael Bluth, the son of Jason Bateman’s character. Between Arrested Development’s original run and its reboot, Cera continued playing the awkward-teenager role in movies such as Juno, Superbad, and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. After the show ended for a second time, Cera has mostly been guest starring on other TV shows, such as Medical Police and At Home With Amy Sedaris. Since 2022, he has been starring in Amy Schumer’s Life & Beth.

Portia de Rossi

On Arrested Development, Portia de Rossi played Lindsay Bluth Fünke, Michael’s sister. While the show was canceled, de Rossi had recurring roles on other shows like Nip/Tuck, Better Off Ted, and Scandal. In 2018, she announced her retirement from acting. Speaking to her wife Ellen DeGeneres (via PEOPLE), she said, “I kind of knew what acting would look like for me for the next 10, 20 years, so I decided to quit and start a business.” However, there is the caveat that she would return for future seasons of Arrested Development, so it’s possible we haven’t seen the last of her.

Will Arnett

Will Arnett played another of the Bluth siblings, Gob. Beginning between the original seasons and the reboot seasons, Arnett took on the titular role in the adult animation series BoJack Horseman. It ran from 2014 to 2020 and was nominated for three Emmy Awards. Aside from BoJack Horseman, Arnett has appeared in shows like The Morning Show, Our Flag Means Death, and Murderville. He has also continued to do voice acting in movies that include Rumble, Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers, and Minions: The Rise of Gru. So, it’s possible you’ve heard his voice more than you’ve seen his face.

Alia Shawkat

Another of the teenage actors on the show, Alia Shawkat was 14 when she took on the role of de Rossi’s daughter, Maeby. In recent years, Shawkat has been acting in a number of short films such as The Key, Alina, The Letter Room, Eer, and more. Her biggest role since playing Maeby is Dory Sief in Search Party. This show is a dark but hilarious series about a group of four friends looking for a college acquaintance when she goes missing. Shawkat can also be seen in the second season of Severance, though details of this role have yet to be revealed.

David Cross

David Cross played Tobias Fünke, Maeby’s father, on Arrested Development. Since 2019, he has guest-starred on some excellent TV shows. Cross played Skip Glouberman in Big Mouth, Dominykas the Dreadful in What We Do in the Shadows, and Gil in Station Eleven — a post-apocalyptic HBO miniseries. In the years that Arrested Development was off-air, he was featured in Kung Fu Panda, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Kill Your Darlings, and Obvious Child. There’s been an interesting mix of mainstream animation and more independent movies along the way.

Tony Hale

The last of the Bluth brothers, Tony Hale played Buster Bluth, the youngest and arguably least competent in the family. Hale has been working hard since the end of Arrested Development, with almost 40 projects under his belt since 2019. Highlights during this period include the role of Gary Walsh on Veep —J ulia Louis-Dreyfus’s political satire series, Jess Oppenheimer in Being the Ricardos, and Forky in Toy Story 4, who was regarded by many as the highlight of the movie. Besides these standout roles, Hale has also done a lot of voice-acting work in things like Harley Quinn and Birdgirl.

Jeffrey Tambor

The Bluth family’s patriarch, George Bluth, was played by Jeffrey Tambor. Other than Arrested Development, one of Tambor’s most recognizable roles was Maura Pfefferman on the show Transparent. He was fired from that show for sexually assaulting another cast member shortly before the final season of Arrested Development came out. As a result, he has only had one project released in the years since. This project was the Disney movie Magic Camp, also starring Adam Devine.

Jessica Walter

The iconic actress Jessica Walter played Lucille Bluth, the mother of the family. After Arrested Development, her career followed a similar trajectory to some of her fellow cast members. She had a major role on the adult animation series Archer and guest starred on shows such as Good Girls, Harley Quinn, and American Housewife. Some of those shows also featured ex-Arrested Development cast members. Sadly, in 2021, Walter passed away at the age of 80. She left an impressive legacy as a beloved, Emmy-winning, versatile actress.

Ron Howard

Ron Howard narrated every episode of Arrested Development and even appeared in a couple of episodes as himself. With Arrested Development over, Howard has not acted or narrated anything since then. However, his main priorities have always been producing and directing. Most notably, in 2020, he released Hillbilly Elegy, starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close, who was nominated for an Oscar for this performance. Later, his movie Thirteen Lives came out, a movie based on the true story of a group of boys and their soccer coach who were trapped in an underground cave system.

Henry Winkler

The Bluth family’s inept lawyer, Barry Zuckerkorn, was played by Henry Winkler. Once again, Winkler has also partaken in a lot of voice acting since his time on Arrested Development. He has been on American Dad!, Scoob!, Vampirina, DuckTales, Human Resources, and more. Winkler’s most prolific role in recent years is Gene Cousineau in Barry. This show is a dark comedy starring Bill Hader as a hitman who moves to LA, Winkler won an Emmy for his role. The ensemble cast of Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch also included Winkler as Uncle Joe.

Liza Minnelli

Hollywood royalty Liza Minnelli played the recurring character Lucille Austero, Lucille Bluth’s “friend” and nemesis. Her last acting job was on the fourth season of Arrested Development, and now that she’s in her 70s, it’s unsurprising that she’s taking her time between work. Minnelli appeared with Lady Gaga at the 2022 Academy Awards, and in the same year, she performed in a two-night show with Alan Cumming on Broadway. We may not know where we’ll see her next but Minnelli is not done performing, when asked by Variety if she wants to act again, she said simply, “Oh, sure.”

Mae Whitman

Mae Whitman last appeared on Arrested Development in 2013. Her character, Ann Veal, or “Egg,” George Michael’s girlfriend, was intentionally forgettable. After her time on the show, she has been in a few movies, including Duck Butter with Arrested Development alum Alia Shawkat, and The DUFF. Whitman’s most notable project of recent years is Good Girls, where she plays Annie Marks, one of three mothers who decide to get involved in dubious activities to regain control of their lives.
