Wes Anderson movies are not for everyone, which is what is great about them. The movie industry is exactly what it says, an industry with the purpose of making a profit. But let us not oversimplify things, the system breaks us all, but people still manage to produce art that inspires and makes it worth living. The problem is, that in an effort to make money, movies tend to blend together, they follow trends, and they look the same. But, not Wes Anderson movies. Love them or hate them, they are different and unique.

Wes Anderson is an American filmmaker with unique visuals, distinct style, and full of eccentricities in his movies. Many of his films contain themes about grief, loss of innocence, and found or/and dysfunctional families. He was acclaimed for his earlier works in Bottle Rocket and Rushmore. With The Grand Budapest Hotel, he got his first Academy Award nomination for Best Director.

This year, he brings a new movie to the table. Here’s everything we know about Asteroid City.

Asteroid City: The Plot

     Universal Pictures

Asteroid City takes place in a fictional American desert town circa 1955. The official synopsis of the film reads that “the itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.”

Asteroid City: The Cast & Crew

     Sony Pictures Releasing

The cast of this movie is full of A-list actors. It is not rare for Wes Anderson movies to have a huge cast full of stars, but this movie is unbelievable. Let’s begin with Tilda Swinton, an actress with roles in mainstream films like her part as the Ancient One in the first Doctor Strange movie or as Gabriel in Constantine, giving her talents and showing emotions just like she does in smaller films, such as the tortured mother in We Need To Talk About Kevin or her Oscar-winning performance in Micheal Clayton.

Collaborating again with Wes Anderson after The Grand Budapest Hotel, we have Adrien Brody, whom we have also seen in movies like The Pianist and Predators. Tom Hanks is also in this movie. Just last year we saw him in Disney’s live-action Pinocchio, in Elvis Presley’s biography Elvis, and in a smaller film where he plays a grumpy old man in A Man Called Otto. Margo Robbie is in this movie when she does not play her iconic character Harley Quinn in the DC movies, she plays in various and different films, like Babylon or Amsterdam.

Another great actress with an iconic mainstream character in this movie is Scarlett Johansson. Now that she is done being Black Widow in the MCU, she can explore more movies. Jeff Goldblum is also in this movie. He has not lost any of his fun and energy, which he proved in his recent appearances in Thor: Ragnarok and Jurassic World movies. Enjoying his success after his breakthrough role in Breaking Bad, we have Bryan Cranston, in his second collaboration with Wes Anderson. He did some voice acting work in Anderson’s Isle of Dogs. After giving amazing performances in horror movies like The Lighthouse or Antichrist, while also being great as the Green Goblin in many Spider-Man movies, we can not wait to see Willem Dafoe in this film.

The cast also includes the amazing talents of Rupert Friend(The Death of Stalin, At Eternity’s Gate), Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore, The Grant Budapest Hotel), Hope Davis (The Daytrippers, Infamous), Jeffrey Wright (The Batman, James Bond), Liev Screiber (The Sum of All Fears, Spotlight), Tony Revolori (The Grant Budapest Hotel), Matt Dillon (There’s Something about Mary, Beautiful Girls), Sophia Lillis (It, I Am Not Okay With This), Steve Park (Fargo, The French Dispatch), Maya Hawke (Stranger Things, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Fisher Stevens (Succession, Short Circuit), Jake Ryan, Ethan Josh Lee (Mr. Robinson), Edward Norton (Fight Club, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery), Steve Carell (The Office, The 40-Year-Old Virgin), Hong Chau (The Menu, The Whale), Grace Edwards, Aristou Meehan, Rita Wilson (Sleepless in Seattle, Runaway Bride), and the singer from the band Pulp, Jarvis Cocker.

Asteroid City is written and directed by Wes Anderson. He is one of the most influential and successful directors of our time, with financially successful and critically successful movies like Isle of Dogs, The Grant Budapest Hotel, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and many more. The movie is also co-written by Roman Coppola, a director and producer known for his movies The French Dispatch, Moonrise Kingdom, and The Darjeeling Limited.

Release Date

     Netflix

Asteroid City will have a limited release in the United States on June 16 before opening to a wide release on June 23.

Every Wes Anderson movie is a reason to get audiences excited, and Asteroid City is no exception for that. The cast in this film is impressive, every single one of these actors can and has carried movies on their own, but all of them together? We have to see the final product of their labor.
