We could have very well seen Aubrey Plaza revealed as one of the Ghostface killers in the Scream franchise if she hadn’t completely blown her audition. Back in 2011, legendary horror director Wes Craven released the slasher sequel Scream 4, a movie that ultimately turned out to be his final film. While featuring franchise mainstays like Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox, the movie also starred Emma Roberts in a key role as Jill, one of the killers.
In a new interview with Hits Radio in promotion of her film Emily the Criminal, Plaza revealed that she had auditioned for Roberts’ role for Craven himself. Hoping to separate herself from the competition, Plaza says she got the idea to go “full method” when she was told she’d be reading for a character who turns out to be the killer. This meant dressing up to make herself look like a cliché movie murderer, but the problem was that this was the exact opposite of what they were looking for. As Plaza explains:

Scream was out of the picture for Aubrey Plaza, but she would get her chance soon enough to join another famous horror franchise. She starred in a main role in 2019’s Child’s Play, a remake of the classic killer doll movie with Mark Hamill voicing a new incarnation of Chucky. The film has drawn some mixed opinions from horror fans, in part because of the original Chucky timeline still ongoing, but everyone seemed to agree that Plaza’s casting was one of the movie’s highlights.
There will be other places for fans to catch Plaza in the future. After Emily the Criminal, Plaza can next be seen in Guy Ritchie’s Operation Fortune: Rose du Guerre, which features the actress as part of an ensemble that also includes Jason Statham, Josh Hartnett, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone, and Hugh Grant. She will also appear in the big-budget feature from Francis Ford Coppola, Megalopolis, alongside such other names as Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Shia LeBeouf, and Nathalie Emmanuel.
