The most expensive movie ever made is well on its way to recouping. Avatar: Way of the Water has climbed steadily to $1 billion in only 14 days globally. Fans are still flocking to the theater to see the James Cameron directed film in droves, with the holiday movie season still in full swing for many.
Variety reports that Avatar: Way of The Water surpasses Jurassic World Dominion and is currently the second highest-grossing film of the year, only falling behind Top Gun: Maverick.
The first Avatar film is still the highest-grossing film ever at the box office, with $2.97 billion in global earnings. Following Avatar at $2.9 billion is Avengers: Endgame with 2.7 billion. Cameron has previously stated that Avatar: Way of the Water will need to make at least $2 billion globally in order to make money at the box office.

Cameron told GQ, “You have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history," Cameron said about turning a profit on the movie. “That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”
Avatar: Way of the Water is currently playing in theaters nationwide where it continues to rack up the profits.
Success At Box Office Could Determine If Future Avatars See the Light of Day

While James Cameron has three more Avatar films mapped out with screenwriters Rick Jaffa (Planet of the Apes), Amanda Silver (Heart of the Sea), Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno, that does not necessarily mean that all the films will get made. Cameron told Total Film that he can not lose money on the franchise and that if he starts to run dry, he may need to wrap up the storyline sooner than he had planned for in the writers’ room.
Right now, the second film’s numbers look promising, and 95% of the filming for the third film, Cameron says, is already complete. Additionally, Cameron says he has shot the beginning of the fourth film. While Cameron’s disclaimers do not guarantee the film’s franchise five will see the light of day, fans can at least anticipate a little more with box office numbers so high.
