Avatar director James Cameron has offered further details of the next installment in the multi-billion-dollar franchise, Avatar 3, revealing that the sequel will introduce not one, but two new tribes of Na’vi. Discussing Avatar 3 with Deadline, Cameron revealed that, not only will the next installment introduce the fire-loving Ash People, but another mysterious tribe as well, as the franchise begins to open up the world of Pandora more than ever before.
So far, audiences have spent time with both the forest tribe, the Omaticaya, and now the water tribe, the Metkayina. With a fire tribe next in line, and using some simple logic, we can no doubt safely assume that this fourth, mysterious new tribe, will be air-dwelling. Meaning that Avatar 3 could be taking audiences high up into the Pandoran mountains.
“Fire has a symbolic purpose in the film and there’s a culture that is specifically around that concept. That’s probably saying too much as we speak. You’re going to meet two completely new cultures in the next film. We met the Omaticaya, we met the Metkayina, and you’re going to meet two new cultures in the next film, and it kind of roves a little more freely around the world of Pandora to different places.”

While details of Avatar 3 are being kept largely under wraps at present, Cameron has offered some insight into what the threequel will involve. After Avatar: The Way of Water introduced the water-based tribe, the Metkayina, Avatar 3 will expand upon the world of Pandora by bringing the fire-based Ash People into the fray. With the Ash People set to take over the antagonist role from the humans.
“I want to reveal the Na’vi from another angle because [so far] I have only shown their good sides,” Cameron revealed. “In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In ‘Avatar 3,’ we’ll do the reverse.”
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water tells the story of the Sully family, the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure. Directed by James Cameron, Avatar: The Way of Water stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald, each of whom will reprise their roles from the original movie, with Sigourney Weaver returning as a new character. New cast members include Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Brendan Cowell.
Avatar: The Way of Water is now in theaters, with three more sequels scheduled. Avatar 3 meanwhile is currently due for release on December 20, 2024, with further installments scheduled for December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028.
