The Way of Water has brought James Cameron a handful of recognitions. First, he is the only director in history to have three films in the top 5 of the highest-grossing list, in addition to giving him the title of the owning highest-grossing film of 2022, after Avatar 2 surpassed Top Gun: Maverick.

But it not only allowed the director to gain glory, but also its protagonist, Zoe Saldana. The actress became the only Hollywood star with four films in the top 6 of the highest-grossing list. Saldana appears not only in the 2 Avatar installments but also in both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, where she plays Gomora.

For Disney, the recent Avatar conquest means the studio has released 3 of the top 5 global titles ever. The top 10 is dominated by the company, with 3 Avengers films, 2 Avatar movies, The Force Awakens, and The Lion King live-action.

Additionally, Avatar: The Way of Water has just been nominated for 4 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, and Best Sound.

Meanwhile, the film continues to dominate the box office week after week, occupying first place for six weeks in a row, being the first one to do so since the first Avatar. Titanic also conquered a similar and important record, staying in first place for fifteen weeks. Avatar: The Way of Water is still in theaters, so the movie could reach some other milestones in the upcoming days.
