Avatar: The Way of Water’s box office response has done everything it needed to prove those who believed the sequel was coming too late after Avatar wrong. Having continued to dominate the current movie charts, the James Cameron epic has seen more screens being added to cope with demand in its fourth week of release, and the film has overtaken Top Gun: Maverick to become the highest-grossing movie released in 2022. In fact, it is now looking to be the highest-grossing movie since Avengers: Endgame broke the $2 billion mark in 2019 and has started its climb up the list of the highest-grossing movies of all time.
After jumping to 15th on the list last week, Avatar: The Way of Water has now swept aside some huge franchise movies to claim the 10th spot on the all-time greatest list. The casualty of the movie’s leap into the Top Ten is Furious 7, which drops out of the list after the Avatar sequel surpassed its $1.515 billion haul.

There are currently no signs of Avatar: The Way of Water slowing down, which means that very soon, some other mighty movies will be displaced as the film continues to ascend towards its predecessor, which currently sits in the top spot.
Which Movies Can Avatar: The Way of Water Overtake in the Highest Grossing Movies of All-Time Chart?
Having broken into the Top Ten, it is not surprising that Avatar: The Way of Water now has a host of huge movies that it will surely pass in the coming weeks. 2012’s The Avengers ($1.518 billion), 2019’s The Lion King ($1.663 billion), 2015’s Jurassic World ($1.671 billion), and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.916 billion) are all expected to be left behind as the movie storms towards a $2 billion box office.
Beyond that, the question becomes just how high James Cameron’s baby can crawl. As well as Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens being just on the other side of $2 billion, Avatar: The Way of Water is expected to begin to lag a little at this point before it can overtake Cameron’s other mega-hit Titanic, which sits in third place on the list with $2.201 billion. Of course, beyond that are the behemoths of Avengers: Endgame and Avatar, but for now, there is little chance of either of those movies being bothered.
For Avatar: The Way of Water, it has been easy pickings thanks to having very little to compete with at the box office over the holiday period. In fact, until Marvel drops Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania on Feb. 17, it is unlikely that anything will take the number 1 spot at the box office away from the film, which can only help its cause. Of course, now many wonder what this means for Cameron’s three remaining Avatar sequels. If they perform anywhere near as well, then James Cameron could go down in history in what seems like an unbeatable position of having six movies in the Top Ten Grossing Films of All-Time. It’s the stuff legends are made of.
