Avatar: The Way of Water raised more questions about Pandora than it answered. One of the most interesting novelties we saw in the movie was Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), and not just her mysterious origins, but her ability to commune with Eywa as well. Kiri might have been one of the most interesting and least-explained Na’vi of the whole film. She seemed to have the ability to plug directly into the planet and feel the heartbeat of the world. Her powers seem like they are going to be very significant, even though we only saw a glimpse of them.
Kiri in The Way of Water was one character that seemed like she would have a big role in Avatar 3. There are a lot of things to ponder about her, and even more that has yet to be revealed. She might have been one of the most important characters that is only being set up for the Avatar sequels. Kiri’s birth connects her deeply to Eywa and the rest of the planet, and we’ve already seen some of her abilities being used to fight the human invasion. Avatar fans are all excited to see what she can do in the future.

Kiri, aside from being one of the most interesting characters in The Way of Water, has an important role in the plot just by being born. It’s hard to remember all the way back to 2009, but fans who went back and watched Avatar again will remember that Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver’s character) died at the end of the film. The Na’vi attempted to transfer her consciousness from her human body into her avatar. As they gathered around the spirit tree, the roots of Eywa reached into Dr. Augustine and her avatar and began to glow. Though the Na’vi chanted, and it looked like for a moment the process was working, Grace died, and her avatar was returned to the human’s lab.
But in The Way of Water, we discovered that Grace’s avatar suddenly became mysteriously pregnant after her death, and no one knew who the father was. Thus, Kiri was born. Many fans think she is just psychic, but Kiri’s connection to Eywa might have something to do with this “failed” attempt to transfer Dr. Augustine’s consciousness. Fan theories suggest that Grace may not have died, but became part of Eywa. It would mean that her consciousness wasn’t transferred to her avatar, but kept alive at the heart of the spirit tree. The theory goes on to suppose that this was the moment that Grace’s avatar became pregnant and Eywa herself is Kiri’s father.
That transfer of consciousness didn’t happen exactly like Jake’s (Sam Worthington), but rather was created through a transfer of energy, creating another body that wasn’t quite Dr. Augustine and not quite someone else. The reason Kiri feels so close to Eywa is that the great spirit of Pandora is part of her in such a unique way. If the rumors are true, no other Na’vi or human, not even Jake Sully, would be this close to Eywa.

What makes Kiri important for the Avatar sequels is the connection to Eywa, as well as her strange birth. The Way of Water included a lot of little things that are bound to be important in the coming films. A lot of these have to do with the nature of life and death. For example, General Ardmore (Edie Falco) mentioned that Earth was dying, and the human race would have to migrate to Pandora. Scoresby (Brendan Cowell), the ship captain, has the job of extracting amrita from the brains of the tulkun. At one point he says it stops human aging.
In the coming Avatar sequels, instead of fighting over unobtanium, humans will be fighting over immortality; whether it comes in the form of transferring your consciousness to an avatar or by drinking a strange golden liquid. In a conflict like this, Kiri represents the significance of death. To become immortal means to never change. Dr. Augustine had to die in order to have a hope of making something new, a biological bridge between humans, Na’vi, and Eywa that created this super-powerful child Kiri. The only way a species can adapt and evolve is by dying and recreating itself.
Kiri might not become a hero in the way Jake Sully did, but she will be a part of this great connection to Eywa. In the movies, they’ve said that the planet responds to threats like an immune system responds to a disease. Eywa may have created Kiri to lead the immune response of all Pandora’s nature, in order to combat the disease that is the human invaders. There would be no one more powerful than this person who could tap into the heart of the planet. We’ll definitely see more of Kiri’s abilities, but whether she comes into her full power in the next movie or in the two planned after, we have yet to see.
