M3GAN might be doing very well at the box office, and some good performing films have arrived in the last few days, but Avatar: The Way of Water is still the number 1 movie in the U.S. following its fifth week after the release of the long-awaited sequel that came out 13 years ago.

According to Variety, the Disney and 20th Century Studios hit has added $7 million this Friday, reaching an astounding $538.8 million at the domestic box office, placing the film 14th in the highest-grossing list domestically.

A few days ago, the film surpassed Jurassic World (2015) and The Lion King (2019) to become the 7th high-grossing movie of all time, which made it profitable, something that was one of the biggest challenges ahead of its debut. The film has a chance of becoming the first movie to reach the 2 billion milestone worldwide after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than once, James Cameron declared that if Avatar: The Way of Water did not achieve a high number at the box office, it was most likely that the rest of the installments would never come to light. Fortunately, that was not the case, and now the director has to think of what’s to come.

In a recent interview, Cameron referred to the saga’s next installment, which will explore something we’ve never seen: Tribal conflicts with the Na’vi.

Avatar: The Way of Water is now playing in theaters around the globe.
