Avatar: Way of the Water is projected to bring in $250 million at domestic box offices by Sunday. The James Cameron film has been doing well at the box office this weekend. The film’s domestic earnings have so far reached $217 million.

It is the film’s second weekend in movie theaters, and with the holiday weekend here, Avatar is at the top of the list for box office grosses. However, compared to the first film grosses, this second weekend represents a sharp drop in total earnings, with a projected 59% drop from last weekend.

The first Avatar film made $2.9 billion in total grosses and is the highest highest-grossing movie of all time. It is too early to tell if the second film in the series can surpass it. According to Collider, Avatar: Way of the Water cost more to make at a budget of around 400 million and will need to make at least $2 billion to break even.

The sweeping nature of Avatar’s success means other films won’t be competing for the number-one spot this year. This weekend, Puss in Boots is currently coming in second place as it’s projected to make around $17 million, and Whitney Houston’s biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody is also faring well with a projected high of around $10 million.

The only other film that has not yet opened in theaters is the Sarah Polley directed Women Talking, which will start its weekend when it opens on the 25th.

Christmas weekend is historically a time for top movies to drop, which compete against each other for audiences’ interest. Movie theaters see increased business during holiday breaks as families seek out-of-home activities and during the holiday season, studios often release films that they believe have a chance at winning awards. It is a time for many families to sit back, relax and watch.
