James Cameron’s place as one of the most successful directors in cinema history has been secured as Avatar: The Way of Water passed $2 billion at the worldwide box office. This makes Cameron the first director to see three of his movies hit that huge milestone, and with more Avatar movies coming his record-breaking feat may not be done yet. There is seemingly no end in sight for the popularity of the Avatar franchise, even with such a long wait between the first two movies. With new films now expected to arrive every two years it is possible that James Cameron could potentially end up with more $2 billion movies under his belt.

Avatar: The Way of Water arrived in cinemas just before Christmas to a huge opening weekend and soon blasted through the $1 billion barrier in less than a fortnight. Since then the movie has continued to work its way up the list of the highest grossing movies of all-time, passing Marvel movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Avengers, Jurassic World, The Lion King and more. While it is unlikely that the film will trouble Avatar or Avengers: Endgame at the top of the table, it will soon pass Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens and potentially Cameron’s own Titanic if it can pull in another $200 million. Having grossed over $140 million in each of the last two weeks, that seems like that will not be a problem for Avatar: The Way of Water to achieve.

James Cameron Has Continually Championed The Cinematic Experience

James Cameron has continually been of the ideal that audiences should go the cinema to see movies wherever possible. While his stance has not really changed on that score, the director has recently admitted that people watching Avatar: The Way of Water at home will be able to still have a good experience even if they have missed the full theatrical experience. He previously explained:

One thing for certain is that any fears of audiences having waited too long for a sequel to care about franchise have well and truly been put to rest, which paves the way for Cameron to continue to make waves and records with the franchise that is now certain to be the director’s greatest achievement of his career. Many fans have already been preparing for Cameron’s charge to continue as you can see below.

“If you watch Way of Water at home on a reasonably large flat screen TV with a decent sound system and you sit close enough and that way across the room, you’re going to have a good experience. I think when you start looking at something on a phone, you’re sort of missing the point. Going to a movie theater is less about the size of the screen and the perfection of the sound system. It’s more about a decision to not multitask. I think that’s the critical part that people are missing. You’re making a deal between yourself and a piece of art to give it your full attention. And you don’t when you’re at home. People don’t cry as much when they watch a movie at home as they will in a movie theater. You don’t have the depth of emotion.”
