Spoiler Warning: Avatar: The Way of Water

Avatar: The Way of Water had a lot of loose ends to set us up for Avatar 3. Just by looking at some of the details, we can tell that there are big things planned for all the Avatar sequels. James Cameron obviously knows what he’s doing since, according to his producer, he’s already finished writing Avatar 4 and 5. Not to mention, Avatar 3 is already 95% done. But in The Way of Water, there were a lot of little details that planted the seeds of something much bigger to come. They might not have been necessary to the plot, but they were big hints pointing at the future.

Avatar: The Way of Water focused mostly on Jake (Sam Worthington) and his fight with Quaritch (Stephen Lang), which we have certainly not seen the end of, but all the little things that came along with this movie really set us up for earth-shaking things down the road. Little things like General Ardmore (Edie Falco) casually mentioning in the first act that Earth was dying. Or Scoresby’s (Brendan Cowell) hunt for amrita, the golden liquid that comes from the tulkuns’ brains and stops human aging. Or Spider (Jack Champion) taking long looks at Kiri (Sigourney Weaver). All of these things and more should become significant as the Avatar saga journeys on.

The Na’vi and The Sky People

     Lightstorm Entertainment

Humans used to mine unobtainium to use as fuel and to conduct energy, but now, they face a different need for resources. General Ardmore stated in the first act of The Way of Water that Earth was dying. Apparently, humans need more than fuel to survive now. All of Earth’s resources are being expended. That means that the Sky People that have come to live on Pandora are doing more than mining it for its natural resources; they are preparing the planet for colonization. It’s likely that, in the future sequels, we can expect to see a lot more humans than the ones we’re seeing right now. Quaritch and General Ardmore might just be the tip of a very long spearhead for Pandora.

This escalating conflict could only come from a greater need for humans to come to Pandora. If they start moving the entire population, they could threaten to turn the planet into a desert in order to make room for more of their people. What could spur the desire to move to Pandora more than the promise of immortality? Scoresby, the captain of the tulkun hunting ship we saw in The Way of Water, was sailing in search of amrita. Amrita is a yellow liquid extracted from a tulkun’s brain that, according to Scoresby, literally stops human aging.

If humans wanted unobtainium before, they will be crawling over each other to get amrita. It was just a little fun fact inside The Way of Water, but it sets up the major conflict of the next three movies. More and more humans will come, determined to take from the Na’vi their sacred bonds with these animals in order to make themselves live forever. Such a pursuit will likely summon all of Earth’s armies in order to extend the life of their species.

Kiri in Avatar 3

     20th Century Studios

Kiri was one of the most interesting characters in Avatar: The Way of Water she had amazing abilities that allowed her to commune with Eywa and control the plants and animals of the planet. She is someone shrouded in mystery. No one knows how she was born or how she is able to connect so deeply with the planet. Many fan theories have come out surrounding who might have been Kiri’s father, or how Kiri might have been mystically conceived, but the important thing to look at for the sequels is how Kiri might play a continually important role in the future. And, as we saw at the beginning of The Way of Water, Spider has a bit of a crush on her.

Kiri is already technically a human-Na’vi hybrid. Even though she has no father, she has five fingers and was born of a human’s (Dr. Grace Augustine’s) avatar. She represents a strange connection not just between the Na’vi and the planet, but between the Na’vi and humanity as well. As her relationship with Spider grows, her children, born of human DNA and of her hybrid DNA might create a new species that would be closer to a Na’vi and human combination. She could turn out to be the mother of a whole new race of aliens. Some might even have the same powers she does.

Kiri will certainly be an important character moving forward. We saw some of her powers, but are left with so many questions to answer about her. The sheer scope of what she might be capable of will no doubt surprise us all in the coming films.
