Avatar 2 is still sweeping the box office and shows no signs of stopping. The James Cameron-directed film, Avatar: The Way of Water has already surpassed $1.51 billion in global revenue and is continuing its climb. The movie surpasses other contenders, such as Top Gun: Maverick, the top film at $1.49 billion in 2022. In 2023, The Hollywood Reporter notes that it is No. 10 in the top-grossing movies of all time.
Previously, Cameron suggested that Avatar: The Way of Water would need at least $2 Billion at the global box office to break even. While the total budget for the film has not been confirmed, it is most likely somewhere between $400-$600 million.
The first Avatar film, released over 13 years ago, surpassed critics’ expectations at the box office when it made $2.9 billion at the global box office. The first film opened to a modest number, however, grossing only $77 Million during its initial release, unlike the sequel, which has already taken the box office by storm. Cameron has surpassed expectations in the past, with critics not thinking that the initial film would do as well as it did

Cameron has three more Avatar films in the works, which he has mapped out with his writing team. Cameron has previously said that production on the rest of the films will be contingent on the success of each of the preceding movies. However, with the current numbers for Avatar: The Way of Water as high as they are and filming on the third entry 95 percent complete, it is a given that audiences can at least expect that there will be an Avatar trilogy.

With Avatar: The Way of Water sweeping 2022 records, many other releases paled in comparison. Other holiday releases have brought in high numbers, but the only film that comes close to Avatar’s hefty $1 billion draw is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Wakanda Forever has had a head start over the other holiday films as they came out in November, and it has grossed nearly $820 million.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish also came out nearly a week after the Avatar: The Way of Water release and has grossed $135.8 million globally.
Other holiday films don’t even close, such as Babylon, which cost over $78 million to produce and has only made $10.8 million as of Monday.
