Don’t expect to see a new Back to the Future series coming in the future. Recently, it had been reported online that Back to the Future would be rebooted with a new animated series adaptation. The rumor had generated enough attention to get a response from the official Twitter account for Back to the Future that debunks the report. In response to the report, a GIF was shared of franchise star Christopher Lloyd simply saying, “It ain’t happening.”
Many fans would have been skeptical of these rumors anyway, given how the franchise creators have long been adamant that the movie series will never be rebooted or given another sequel. In order for Back to the Future 4 or any kind of reboot to be greenlit, it would need the approval of director Robert Zemeckis. For years, Zemeckis has maintained that the series needs to be left alone, no matter how much money Hollywood offers.

“There will never, ever be, in the most absolutely way, a Back to the Future 4,” Zemeckis emphatically told the Italian publication Bad Taste earlier this year. “There will be no more Back to the Future.”
Back to the Future Has Had an Animated Series
While the movie series was finished with Back to the Future Part III, the franchise has in fact had an animated series adaptation. Originally airing for two seasons from 1991 to 1992, the series is set after the events of the movies with Doc and Marty embarking on new time-traveling adventures. Mary Steenburgen and Tom Wilson returned to voice their respective characters Clara Clayton Brown and Biff Tannen, though Dan Castellaneta and David Kaufman provided voiceover work for Doc Brown in Marty. However, Christopher Lloyd appeared as Doc in live-action segments to introduce and close out each episode.
The franchise has also expanded to other mediums as well. There have been comic books, video games, and even a theme park ride. More recently, there has been a stage musical adaptation made inspired by the films. It will be coming to Broadway in 2023. Continuing on in these other ways will keep the franchise alive, but another reboot movie or series is what’s off the table.
Lately, Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox have been celebrating the franchise by reuniting to launch a new web store for fans of the series. The exclusive merchandise, which you can find at BacktotheFuture.shop, even includes an autographed Marty McFly vest. The two actors have said they designed this merchandise for the fans who kept asking for more options to show their Back to the Future love.
